Ok, I got my sister-in-law to sign-up with Vonage. I set her up with my exact setup.

WRT54G as the core router (running DD-WRT v23)
RTP300 as the Vonage router

We both have Road Runner as an ISP; her's is a new install as she just moved to a new house (to her) she just bought.

I plugged in all the equipment and all is fine. She get dialtone and can make and receive calls. Then I leave. Then I get a call from her (on her cell) that she cannot make calls, only receive them. I go over there and the lights on the RTP that should be on are on and look fine. I reboot everything and all works great and then in about 5 minutes...no dialtone. I make a call to her line via my cell and it works.

I call Vonage and they said that the RTP wasn't getting updated and to reset it and well it's finally up to .62 so fine. Well it still doesn't work. So I brought the equipment to my house, I plug her RTP into my WRT54G router and within 15 seconds it boots and I get dialtone. I proceed to use it for about 5 hours with no problems!

I will be bringing my computer over there today to do "testyourvoip.com" but I just wanted to get this thread started to get any other tips that I am missing....

I am wondering if the interior wiring could screw up the RTP300?

The wiring seems to be alittle bit "unorganized" and she has a crappy Uniden cordless phone attached.

When there is no dialtone if I call her Vonage number from my cell, it will ring and the call will go through, no problem. After I hang up I can pick up the Vonage line and there is dialtone...for awhile and then it goes dead.

The numbers look good, which means that your problem is probably an intermittent connection loss of some type.

First, do the obvious, check your cables. Make sure all the patch cables are in good shape, that all the devices are getting power and the wall socket doesn't have too much plugged in, etc).

Also, are you both running the same brand of cable modem?

Do you both have the same version of the WRT54G? What firmware are you running on each?

The cable modem is not the same. I have a Toshiba and she has some small Scientific Atlanta one...

The "core routers" are identical Linksys WRT54G v3 running DD-WRT v23 with the same configuration.

The "Vonage Routers" are identical Linksys RTP300 running v.62 firmware.

I poking around right now and I disconnected the RTP from the interior wiring and directly plugged in a cheap corded phone. Well I have been here for 45 minutes and I have not seen any dialtone problems yet. so this makes me wonder....bad phones or bad interior wiring making the RTP "open a line" maybe?

"bad phones or bad interior wiring making the RTP "open a line" maybe?"

That is very possible.

Of course, that begs the obvious question - did you make SURE, I mean REALLY, REALLY SURE that there is no connection from the telco to the inside wiring? Wink

If you hadn't run the phone test, I would be immediately suspicious of the "Scientific Atlanta" modem.

I made sure that the interior wiring was disconnected from the outside.

Now I am doubting the internal wiring. After being here for over an hour with her phone plugged directly into the RTP300, it just plain works!
I went and plugged it into her wall jack and guess what? No dial tone. I do here a faint buzzing. I think something must be wired up wrong in the house.
I will keep it plugged directly into the RTP300 for now and let her use it for a day. If it keeps working then I will tackle working out the interior wiring.

Try plugging just a phone, not the Vonage line at all, into a wall jack. Do you still hear the buzzing, or any noise whatsoever? Does a simple Slimline phone make ANY sound at all when you pick up? If so, there is voltage on those lines and you're darned lucky the Vonage unit didn't let the smoke out. Wink

If not, sounds like you have some pretty major interference of some kind on those lines, or there is a short circuit somewhere, or something. Until you get that sorted out, I would strongly recommend not plugging the RTP300 back in again. You may have some very real and very not-covered-under-warranty problems.

Also, does the adapter phone light ever start flashing with the phone on hook? If so, there may be a phone off hook in the house somewhere, or, worse, a partial short in the wiring. That would explaing the adapter taking itself out of service after awhile.
