Hello all. My first post here! Wink

I've been a Vonage customer for about 6 months now and have no complaints about the service. However, my wife and I are experiencing a frustrating problem. Whenever she connects to her company's network, via a VPN, and I am using our internet connection in some other capacity (usually playing Xbox 360 online), she has a hard time staying connected to the VPN. Specifically, she can only send email thru the VPN sporadically (using Outlook).

I know this seems like a very specific question, but I am only looking for general information. I have not opened any ports on the router and I was wondering if this sounds like the kind of problem that could be caused by that. My theory is that since there are no ports open, the router is handling all traffic the same way which therefore might cause interruptions in her connection enough to cause timeouts and such. It's just a theory. I am by no means a network expert (can ya tell? Smile ). Oh...and she's on a Mac Powerbook which makes it even more difficult for me as I am strictly a PC guy.

If it helps, we have cable ISP (Time Warner) and she has this problem connecting both wirelessly and hardwired.

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions or tips on where to look, specific or general, I'd really appreciate it.

The WRTP54G has several "VPN Passthrough" options (under "security", "VPN passthrough"), do you have the appropriate one enabled for her VPN type?

What type of VPN does she use?

I don't know offhand, but I can definitely find out. Right now, IPSec and PPTP passthroughs are enabled. Would she be able to connect at all if the passthrough was disabled? Because she CAN connect...she just has problems when the connection is being used by another device.

Well, probably not, but a lot of it depends on the type of proxy. I know IPSEC is a complete no-go without the IPSEC passthrough (I use IPSEC for work sometimes, though usually I use a specialized multi-point Socks proxy).

Of course, depending on your bandwidth and other factors, the connection could simply be timing out.

Well, unfortunately, I'm not the one who uses it so I don't truly have a feel for how it's acting, but from what I gather she's not totally losing her connection.

My next idea is to open router ports for the Xbox. I obviously don't NEED to do that since my connectivity is fine, but again, I'm assuming that the router would handle the traffic more efficiently if the ports are open.
