How does the 'change your number" work? Does it assign a new tele # and dump your current number?
And if so, calling your dumped #, what recorded msg do you get ? (not in service, disconnected, ???)

In short, can you simple change to a new # and discontinue the old using the "change your number" feature?

I believe it you use the change your number feature your old number will be disconnected with a message that it is not in servce... at least until they hand it out again to the next new Vonage customer.

I am not sure how long it takes for this change to be in affect but I would imagine the process does not take much longer than just getting a new virtual number. When I signed up for a virtual number the website told me that the change would be in affect in a few hours. The new number was working in less that 5 minutes.

you seem to have different options if you disconnect the old one right away (no message to callers) or get a change notification for a while or permanently forward the old one.
if you go through the web site to do it they show you the options.

If I remember right your old number becomes a temporary virtual number for 7 days giving you time to tell people the new number.

The below text is right from the Vonage website in the "Change your Phone number" option:

When you change your number, Vonage gives you three choices:

Permanent Call Forwarding with Virtual Number
You keep your old number as a Virtual Number, forwarding calls to your new number permanently and never falling out of touch with important people

Temporary Call Forwarding
Your old number will stop forwarding calls to your new number after seven days

No Call Forwarding
Your old number stops taking calls immediately
Please note that regardless of which option you choose, ALL stored voicemail messages associated with your old number will be DELETED PERMANENTLY AFTER SEVEN DAYS.

Please choose an option below:

Permanent Call Forwarding with Virtual Number
Forward calls from my old Vonage number to my new Vonage number permanently by turning it into a Virtual Number. ($4.99 monthly charge**)

Temporary Call Forwarding
Forward calls from my old Vonage number for seven days. (No Charge)

No Call Forwarding
Please do not forward calls from my old Vonage number. (No charge)

Thanks folks!!!!

I ported my qwest # over, but seems lately I'm getting so many nonsense calls, like # unknown or 1800 tele market(?). They dont leave msgs, just rings then they hangup.
Just looking into getting a new diff # if need be, and how the process works.
thanks

Changing your # is one option. Have you tried the national no call list? https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx And check to see if your state has a no call list too. I've been on the list since it began, and I can't even remember the last telemarketer call I got.

Then again, maybe Vonage will start ACR!!! Definitely not holding my breath for that one though.
