It's really puzzling. My Internet connection is fine, and I get 6mbps download speeds too. But when I don't use my phone, it'll lose it's dialtone after 5-10 minutes of inactivity. However, I will still be able to receive calls, oddly enough. And then my dial tone will come back, but then after 5-10 minutes of not using my phone, i will lose dial tone again. Has anybody else had this issue?

I've been talking to Vonage tech support over the past 3 weeks trying to rectify this issue. All their technicians tell me the same things, and do the same things. I've also spoken to tier 2, and no help either. Reset the router, change to the Phone 2 port, blah blah blah. They are finally sending me a replacement linksy rtp300, but i'm not sure it'll help. I'm currently using the 1.00.62 firmware.

That sounds like a tough one. Please get back to us after trying the new RTP300. In the meanwhile, how are you upload speeds? Do you get good results on a test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com in both directions?

Are you sure about those upload speeds? They're really not consistent with the packet discards that you're getting on the uplink. Are they consistent?

Well, I just got my new RTP300 and replaced it. Still having the loss of dialtone issue. I called Vonage again, but their support has been no help at all.

Anyhow, here are the latest results that I just got from testyourvoip.,com to Boston and back

At this point it appears to me that you have an issue with your ISP. Those packet discards on the uplink just aren't consistent with your uplink bandwidth. Try plugging your computer directly into the modem without the Vonage adapter and repeat the test. If your packet discards stay poor, then that confirms it.

Does wiring with the telco and my house wiring have anything to do with it? I live in a townhouse complex, and the demark for the telco and my house is located in a separate building.

Do I need to separate the my home wiring from the telco's?

Steve,

I'm in Orlando (Oviedo) with Brighthouse Networks. Download speeds for file transfers are blazingly fast, and upload isn't bad at all. However, from what you are saying, it appears as if I am getting a good amount of packet discards.

Vonage has always been troublesome for me as I always hear a dialtone for a fraction of a second or so after the party I am calling picks up and says "Hello?" It sounds more like "o?" by the time the dial tone goes away.

I am using the WRT54GP2 router and I working directly off the modem.

Anything is possible, but one thing is certain here. If you're not absolutely sure that you're completely disconnected from the landline telco, then you definitely need to separate your Vonage adapter from the house wiring.
