There's a lot of reference to this site: http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html here on the forums. I'm interested in applying these ideas like prioritizing MAC Address and configuring ethernet ports as he describes on his page but there's no specific instructions on how to do so. Thanks for any help. James |

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/wrt54glqos.html (written for WRT54GL routers with aftermarket firmware).
The basics are:
1. If the router supports it, set your upstream bandwidth for QoS to about 90% of your tested upstream bandwidth.
2. Set your Vonage device to HIGHEST on MAC address priority. |

Nate,
I am a brand new Vonage user and have the WRT54GS router in front of my Vonage box (RTP300). I currently use Sveasoft Alchemy, but am thinking of switching to the firmware you suggest. Have you any experience with Sveasoft?
Should I make the switch? |

True, the instructions are for that specific router, but the QoS screens for any router should be asking for MAC address, priority, and hopefully would have a place where you can adjust the upstream bandwidth manually (or at least confirm what it is calculating for upstream).
The basic concepts are the same for QoS no matter what your router, except of course for the Hawking/StreamEngine based routers that seem to identify Voip packets and prioritize them without as much setup. |

I have heard about Sveasoft, but I've never tried it. A few people have mentioned that HyperWRT is better, but others think Sveasoft is better.
Of course, HyperWRT Thibor has the advantage of being free (with donations being voluntary).
I'd give it a try. Worst case, you don't like it, and you go back to Sveasoft, right? |

My 2 cents:
I was a sve$oft subscriber and loved it - on a Linksys Wrt54GS
I have now switched to DD-WRT - it is free and the QoS seems to be as efficient as Sveasoft Talisman |

Sorry to jump in ... Will this work if my setup goes like this? Cable Modem>>Netgear FVS318>>Motorola VT2442 (Vonage device). The Motorola that Vonage gave me supports QoS but not the Netgear. Can I still implement it with the phone gateway inside the router? |

The Vonage device (assuming its QoS works at all, which I have yet to see any glowing reports on) can ONLY control devices that are attached "after" it in the chain. In other words, it can only control traffic that goes through it.
Your options are:
1. Place the Vonage/Motorola device before the Netgear router (if it has a "passthrough" port or has a built-in router), and see if its QoS serves your needs.
2. Replace the Netgear router with one that supports QoS. |
