Should work fine. Your NetGear has a switch built-in already, so you are just going through another switch.
Have you tried it when plugged directly into your NetGear? |

i just did and everything works fine...
problem is i have a corded phone and the router is 3 offices away....
i bought the switch just for this as i only have one ethernet cable that long (50+ ft needed) and was trying to run everything off of that... has anyone tested this setup before? the Dlink switch is definitely to blame
my options are: 1. find a solution to running my PC and the PAP2 off the Dlink switch 2. Buy a 50ft ether net cable 3. Buy a cordless phone 4. Buy a 50ft phone cord 5. Buy a Motorola VT1005 or other phone adapter with a PC output ps: i'd rather not BUY anything else
suggestions? perhaps R&D could figure out why this setup doesn't work
it really should |

Does anything else cause problems with the switch?
Have you tried plugging into different ports? |

thanks for the quick reply,
Does anything else cause problems with the switch?
the switch has not experienced problems with any other hardware/firmware/pc combinations as far as i'm concerned, it was purchased brand new a week ago
Have you tried plugging into different ports?
I've switched the PAP2 thru all 5 ports on the switch as well, no help
Thanks in advanced for your help |

Well, that's a mystery, and no doubt.
A switch is a switch is a switch, at least in theory. Nothing a switch does to your data should make an upstream device have to reset an Internet connection, or anything.
You may want to return that switch from whence it came and purchase a different unit. |

I agree with Nate, there should be no reason why having an external switch would make the Netgear lose it's WAN IP address. Make sure your Netgear is on the latest firmware.
Also, what device is terminating your T1?
A little test you could try is this. Determine the Netgear's WAN IP address and statically configure it on the interface. See what happens with the Dlink in place when you make a call. |

The netgear had already been updated with all of the latest firmware and is set to automatically check and install updates when connected.
I've rearanged hardware in a different network so that i would have a different switch to test with before returning the dlink, this is a Linksys 5 port workgroup switch. After replacing the dlink with the linksys the problem still occurs!
I bought a cordless phone to get me by without extensive cabling... but i still don't understand why this would happen, perhaps its the PAP2? why would it work connected directly to the router and not thru a switch?
Determine the Netgear's WAN IP address and statically configure it on the interface. See what happens with the Dlink in place when you make a call.
Nothing happens to the router status, all settings remain at their appropriate configuration (see below), the router doesn't see a problem with the internet connection in any of the three ports (wireless, lan and wan). The router has no idea it has no connection even though it's set to connect automatically
Also, what device is terminating your T1? [/b][/i]
How do i find out? |

So, did the Netgear lose Internet connectivity with a statically configured WAN IP address and the switch in place?
As far as the T1, did Earthlink install a router at your location? |
