1. Your location: Redmond, WA, USA
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc): Comcast Cable
3. Upload and download speeds: 4.5MB/600K
4. Modem make and model: Motorola SurfBoard
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2: PAP2
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC: Cable Modem >> WRT54GX4 >> PAP2
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc: Unable to connect to Vonage - Solid blue light for power, solid blue for internet connectivity, no phone light in either phone 1 or phone 2; no dial tone (more below)
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston: Unable to complete

I have tried with out of the box settings, tried setting the Vonage phone adapter to a static IP per the directions in the user manual; power cycled everything multiple times with no success. I have great internet connectivity on my PCs connected via LAN and wireless, just not able to get the Vonage adapter online. Spent more than an hour on with Vonage support with no luck (they dropped me on a transfer to tier 2 support!!!) so I thought I'd post here while I go through several more hours of phone support.

It's disturbing that you're unable to complete a test call at testyourvoip, given that you've got good internet connectivity. Tell us more about that if you can.

Is the WRT set up as a DHCP server, and is the PAP2 set up to get its IP dynamically? Does the WRT get its IP dynamically? If yes to all, try plugging the PAP2 directly into the modem. Do you get a phone light that way?

Thanks for the replies.

Steve48: I was unable to run testyourvoip earlier simply because I was posting from work. I just finished the tests here at home and seem to get a score of 3.7-3.8 on average.

I do have the router to DHCP and the PAP2 to dynamically, although I did also try static yesterday. After the kids go down for bed I will try direct connection again, but I did try that yesterday with no luck.

With the router you have, disable the SPI firewall in the wrt config. If it works after that, just assign a static IP on the WAN side of the Vonage device and put it on the DMZ of your WRT. Certain firewalls will block the SIP packets that are used to register your devices (see DSL routers like Westells that do NAT). Also, the SPI in this particular router will cause delays in the RTP traffic making your inbound/outbound audio break up a little bit. By putting the phones on the WRT's DMZ, you will bypass the SPI Firewall for the phones thereby getting rid of the bottleneck.
