Post subject: choppy / lost signal
All -
I'm having trouble with choppy calls over the past few days - usually calling back fixes it. Occasionally incoming calls go straight to voice mail.
Location: Cedarhurst, NY (JFK area)
ISP: Optimum Online
Down: 4969kbps Up: 1593kbps
Setup: Cable Modem->Netgear MR814v2->RT31P2 (I know, this isn't 100% kosher, but I had a tough-to-configure existing wireless network and din't want to mess with it...it's worked well until now)
TestYourVoip results
(note that this test was done via wireless network, altho the RT31P2 is hard-wired to the Netgear):

Post subject: Same exact problems.
I am having the exact same issues. Yes mine just started within the last week. When I get an incoming call, the people I am talking to sound like they are cutting out really bad, or like they are garbled almost completely. I just tell them I can't hear them and I will try to call them back. I hang up, look at caller ID, and call that person back. Now there is nothing wrong. I can talk for as long as I like now without any problems. This seems to only be happening with incoming calls.

I seem to have a really stable connection. I show no packet loss while using ping, and some other applications, like TeamSpeak.
Not sure why this just started happening, but I really can't get any incoming calls now. Very Frustrating.
-Any assistance in determining the issue and hopefully resolving it would be greatly appreciated here too.

Barry, you have a lot more packet discards than would be expected given your IS bandwidth. If you can, try connecting a computer by hard wiring directly to your modem and repeating the test. If things don't improve, you have an issue to discuss with your ISP.

Post subject: Try the Hawking Broadband Booster
I've got the Hawiking thing that gives some QoS outgoing. Seems to have reduced the jitter.

Actually though your symptoms are similar to Barry's, the cause doesn't seem to be the same. As you say, your IS seems to be solid and your test call results look very good, where Barry has a lot of packet discards. If you haven't tried re-cycling power on the whole setup, then you should do that.
If that doesn't help, then try to run a
Voip
test as soon after one of these incidents as you can and see if there is something different about those results. If that stll doesn't help- and I'm afraid it won't- then you're probably in for a session with customer service. Your router may be going bad.
Oh, one thing. Is there a cordless phone in the picture here somewhere? 2.4 GHz cordless phones and wireless routers make for all kinds of weird interference problems, even when they've been working without problems for a long time before the issues first start.

Barry, I think you need to have a talk with your ISP. Those packet discards are there even with all extra equipment out of the picture. That's not consistent with the bandwidths that you have.

Just spoke with Optimum Online, and they claim that ping times to my modem are coming back with an average of 12ms, max 40ms. I get similar results when I ping Yahoo. So why am I getting such poor results from testmyvoip, and more importantly, how do I make them see it? They're now claiming that it must be
Vonage
with the problem (even though I explained that I'm trying a test directly through the modem, and it has nothing whatsoever to do with
Vonage
at this point).
