PostPosted: Sun Apr 02, 2006 9:20 pm    Post subject: Equipment advice: PAP2, WRTP54GP2, WRTP54G Reply with quote Back to top

I am ready to make the switch to Vonage and I need a little help with equipment choices. My setup is currently:

Cable Modem
-> Linksys BEFW11S4
---> PC 1 (moderate internet usage)
---> Network Printer (light usage)
---> PC 2 (rare internet usage)
---> Linksys BEFW11S4 (second router used just as a switch)
------> PC3 (moderate internet usage)
------> PC4 (rare internet usage)

I can currently get the PAP2 for $-36 (CircuitCity), the WRTP54GP2 for $-3 (buy.com) or the WRTP54G for $29 (CircuitCity).

I was planning on putting whatever device I bought on the first router and moving either PC2 or the Network Printer to the second router.

My question is this: will all of the three given devices work with my current BEFW11S4 even though it does not have a manual QoS setting? I am leaning toward the WRTP54GP2 since it is free and can serve as a backup router if I need it (I would disable the wireless and not use any it as a router, just a phone device).

Please let me know if something seems broken or if this setup should work.

TIA.

Thomas

The setup should work. The lack of QoS is worrisome, but it's the same with any of the adapters. I think you're making a good choice.

Try making a test call to Boston at www.testyourvoip.com . It will give you an idea of the kind of service you're likely to get with Voip with your internet service provider.

Thanks Steve. I scored a 3.9 on the test call to Boston. I tried the test call 3 times last night and got the same score all three times.

As an alternative to the setup I proposed earlier, would it make sense to insert the WRTP54GP2 between the cable modem and my existing BEFW11S4 and connect only my phone line and the BEFW11S4 to the WRTP54GP2? i.e. -

Cable Modem
-> WRTP54GP2 (wireless disabled)
---> Phone
---> BEFW11S4
------> Existing connections

I understand from reading other posts that the WRTP54GP2 is a lousy router and lousy for wireless, but I was thinking with this setup I could setup QoS priority for the phone and then have the rest of my internet access through one port at a lower priority. Also, I think that this would keep any LAN activity from affecting my phone service.

Does this seem reasonable?

Thanks again.

Yes, it seems reasonable. It's true that the WRTP is not the best router in the world, but that's only an issue if your usage pattern exceeds its capabilities. I'd try it that way, and if it works in your situation, then you've solved the QoS problem.

I have the WRTP54G. I bought it with the 1.00.18 firmware. It was a mess. With many firmware updates, I find it to be pretty good. Not perfect. It has the 1.00.60 firmware now. Lets face it, by the time they perfect it's firmware, the router will be ready for a replacement, lol.
