Hi All,

Has anyone tried Vonage on both DSL and Cable to compare both?

The reason I ask is I know some people that are moving and want to get Vonage and asked which is better.

I personally have Cable with a 2.0Mb Down and 384k up and Vonage works very well on it even with heavy downloading going on.

I know most DSL is slower on the down but higher on the up but the one time I had DSL, I hated it. The DSL provider like all claimed that unlike cable, you would always get the same up and down rate. I found DSL to vary more than Cable for broadband. I never got the guranteed 1.5Mb download as promised and was surprised how much faster I was with Cable.

I realize my experiences is related more to Alltel (which **** IMO) than with DSL in general.

I am curious of other peoples experience.

Antipas,

No problem with the Poll. I should have put it there myself.

Does the fact that you have to login with many DSL services cause any problems with Vonage?

I have run the ping plotter program with my Time-Warner Cable to the Vonager server and was getting as high as 147ms ping time. I contacted Time Warner and they came out and ran a new line and boosted the signal +7db and now my ping time to the server is 38ms. That has made a world of difference. I still ocassionaly get an echo but not very often. I have had several people comment that it sounds clearer than regular phone calls when I call them which I suspect has something to do with the amount of static that the ATA generates.

Storm,
welcome to the Vonage forum and Yes DSLR is a great page.

with most DSL service your "DSL modem/router" handles the login password for the Authentication: therefore it should not effect the Vonage connection at all I know with my setup I have a Cisco DSL modem/router I go from that to a linksys, in short I have not experienced any problems with my qwest DSL and my Vonage. allot of my friend's have cable and love it but I still swear by my trusty reliable dsl.

I have Covad DSL and ATTBI cable for redundancy; I work from home and cannot work without my Internet connection. I have tried my Vonage on the DSL and the Cable, it seems to work better with the DSL, I suspect that this is due to the fact that my DSL is 512/512 and my cable is 1.7/256.

Cable for me.

I was a very early adopter of DSL back in the PhoenixDSL days. PhoenixDSL went out of business, then Telocity bought the service then they went out of business, then Rhythms bougth their service then they went out of business. Who's left?

So I got @Home Cable - and they went out of business. My local cable company eventually offered 1.5M/128k and - knock on wood - they're still in business 2 years later.

I liked DSL for the low latency and sync speeds - but I had to have local phone service whether I liked it or not. It sucked and was very expensive.

With cable - I've cut the land line ties via Vonage, however I still have to have Basic Cable TV in order to have my cable modem.

Satellite is too slow, extremely high latency and way too expensive.

I'm to far out in the sticks to get Microwave...

You just can't win.

I vote for Cable.

I've never compared the two, but I'll put in my 2 cents. I like cable for 2 reasons. Most DSL you cannot cancel your POTS dial tone and go 100% Vonage. The second reason is more personal. I cannot stress strongly enough how much I dislike SBC. I had enough bad experiences with them to make me dislike them for life, and if I never have to pay them another cent as long as I live, it will still be too soon. <Rant Mode Off>

I'm happy with my cable with 2 down and 300+ up. Once in a while I get some echo and my international calls are clear. I thought that the whole point was to get back at the phone companies...i'm just waiting for the wifi cell to kick in...die phone companies, die!!!

My vote goes to cable. I have had DSL for years but the farther you are from the phone telco office, the slower your speeds. I've never been that close to have really super up/down speeds. My cable is much, much faster and really has perfect phone calls using Vonage.
