I just got signed up with Vontage and bought the UTstarcom WiFi phone with my service.
I see on this website, in the pull down menu under WiFi phone, an article about the beta test of the Vontage Wi-Fi portable handsets and it states
" The Wi-Fi phone will be an additional handset option to be used with your current Vontage service"
I just got off the phone (not my WiFi phon, by the way as it is still having LOTS of problems) with Vontage customer service and they tell me I can't have a regular phone line adapter and a WiFi phone with the same number... So what's the real story? Anybody know?
Also, can I use my mac laptop with a headset somehow to make calls? seems like an obvious feature that should be available.. |

That is how it works. A Vonage number is tied to a MAC address of a phone adapter or a Voip phone. You can not have multiple phone adapters (or Voip phones) that are tied to a single Vonage number.
I guess when they said "The Wi-Fi phone will be an additional handset option to be used with your current Vontage service" they assumed that you already had Vonage service (on a phone adapter) and you were getting the WiFi phone to add to your account. In this case the WiFi phone would also have to use an addational number.
It would be cool if you could have Vonage service on a phone adapter and add one or more WiFi phones as extensions to that line... and when a call comes in have it ring all the "extensions". I am not sure if this is technicaly feasable or not with the SIP protocol but Vonage does not allow it. You could get a phone adapter (or the Softphone client) and add it to your account to use in addition to your WiFi phone... but it would have to have a seperate number... and its own pool of minutes, and another charge payable per month.
That is just the way Vonage works (for now). One device per phone number. |

If you wanted to do that, you would still need a seperate number assigned to the Wifi phone. Then you can setup simulring to ring both your main Vonage line and the wifi phone at the same time whenever anyone calls your main line. |
