I just got Vonage and so far I love it but I just discovered a problem. Phone and FAX service is working perfectly but today I ran into a problem when tried to dial into a RAS server from my computer. It made the connection but was never able to finalize the connection and crapped out. I then plugged back into my still live analog line and I made the connection fine so I know problem is not with my PC or modem. What gives? I called Vonage tech support but they weren't very helpful. The guys told me to try using the Vonage line we were speaking on and said he would call me back on my cell but guess what it still didn't work and he never called me back. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You |

Vonage will not support modem calls at full speed, this is a limitation of the SIP protocols that Vonage uses to carry voice traffic. Make sure you are using the highest quality setting (this can sometimes be achieved by dialing *99 before the call but can always be set on the website). You will need to cap your modem speed, you can try different speeds until something works. I suggest starting at 14.4 and working your way up as long as you get clean connections. You will have to check with your corporate IT department to ensure their modems will function at lower speeds. |

I've gotten full v.90 connections on Vonage. There are secrets to doing it.
The first is that most modems, particularly built-in modems in laptops, are not very good. Get a good modem. Look on eBay for a US Robotics V.Everything modem with v.90. They will cost you about $10-20, and they are the best modems on Earth. I should warn you that they are quite large physically. I like them so much that I have three. (OK, I am a little geeky.)
Second, you want to set your dial prefix to add *99w (or *99, - including the comma - if your software won't let you use a w, which waits for the second dialtone). This makes the Vonage system give your call the maximum bandwidth. |
