Call the cable company. When you do, have this setup. modem>pc.
When you do, don't tell them you have Voip.
Tell'm your connection drops when doing downloads or gaming.
To many packet discards from excessive Jitter causing Burst Loss.

let us know what they say.

They will probably say "how did you determine this". Can't tell them I used testyourvoip.com.

Is there another way to test packet discards and burst loss not using testyourvoip.com?
Why should I ask them this?
Did you determine that this is the cause of my problems?
Is 2.8% packet discards to much?
How much is acceptable?
I know what packet loss is. What is packet discards?
What is burst loss?

Thanks again,
James

You can tell them you game your playing or the download stopped half way through. www.DSLReports.com/tools Packet Loss Test => Just sign up for a free account. They have a number of tests. Keep in mind that their test use ICMP packets only. Not voice or data packets. So their results may not be conclusive to your problem.
jamepc wrote:

Ask them what? Tell them to check your line quality because your losing connection when your downloading or gaming. It may take multiple calls to the provider for them to see the intermittancy of the line quality. They may need to send a tech out.
jamepc wrote:

No, I did not come to out to your place. You ran the test without the V system. I believe the test does use Voip packets. Maybe the provider has a thing about all Voip traffic. Thereby giving it low priority on their network. You can test on the other site mentioned and see if the quality is good. It may not even be your provider. It may be a network upstream of them. Run tracert from Start/Run/cmd/ tracert secure.vonage.com and you will see the networks involved.
jamepc wrote:

When you get to around 2.5 Random will become Burst Loss.
jamepc wrote:

That depends, how much of the conversation you are willing to lose.
jamepc wrote:

Packet Loss is packets that never made it to the destination IP. Packet Discards are packets that made it but were not able to be put in sequence in the conversation. So they were discarded.
jamepc wrote:

Excessive Discards or Loss that will result in broken conversations

Keep in mind these are suggestions, not the rule. Here to help, if possible.
