My setup: Mot modem -> VT1000v -> switch -> PCs

About a month ago, my phone went dead and I had no internet. Mot VT1000v does not respond when I try to go to its webpage.

This was after a LONG time of no issues. (Like a year)

I went to the basement and reset all my equipment (power cycled UPS supplying everything). Phone came on, internet came back. "Must have been a freak glitch," I tell myself.

After that day, this procedure repeats every few days. Lately, it has become every day or even twice a day!

Instead of power cycling everything (modem, vt1000v, switch) I have discovered that I need only reset the VT1000v each time... after about 15-20 seconds, everything comes live again.

I called Vonage and talked to someone (in India apparently) who said that my VT1000v is out of warranty and that I should go to Best Buy or Circuit City and buy a new adapter. He can't help me beyond this suggestion.

I think this stinks. I always thought the VT1000v was primitive and dumbed down, but at least it always seemed to work ok. Now it's requiring all these resets and has become disruptive to my daily life.

Back when I first got Vonage (forever ago), I had a few reset issues and Vonage tech support (India) told me that the power transformer originally shipped with the VT1000 was defective and they would send me a replacement transformer. I never received the new one. I wonder if this supposed marginal transformer isn't causing me problems now. Perhaps the voltage output from it is dropping to a critical level and causing a lock-up?

Or, maybe Vonage pushed new firmware to the VT1000v and that's why these lockups started happening all of the sudden?

I see on the Vonage website there are some new adapter products, including the VT2442 which has a 4 port router (I could ditch my switch). However I am not eligible for the noted rebate because I'm not a new customer. Sad

Does anyone have a VT2442 that they can comment on? If I have to pay cash for a new adapter, I don't want to get one with a bad track record.

Or, if anyone has any theories on this phenomenon. Thanks.

Any recent changes? Have you started using BitTorrent or another P2P client (Limewire, Kazaa, etc) recently?

Hmmmmm. No changes that I can think of. I'm not a gamer, and I don't share music with anyone. I do have Skype running, which I use when I work from home to chat with co-workers. I don't believe the start of this phenomenon coincides with my installing Skype.

As a test I will remove Skype from autostart to see if there's any change in performance with it not running.

Still, it seems "wrong" to me that any network traffic could cause the VT1000 to lockup. To me that's a design flaw. I'm not saying this problem couldn't exist, I just think it's a bad thing.

It depends on the nature of the traffic. Your VT has a router built into it, and that router is designed for a certain level of traffic. Problems with BitTorrent plague MOST consumer routers, and the Vonage routers are certainly no exception to that rule. But that has more to do with the number of connections the router is expected to maintain, not the actual amount of traffic.

I don't see how Skype could affect it, it's just a Voip service. But it's worth a try.

Does the VT support any sort of logging? You may be able to trap error messages from it using Wallwatcher.
