What kind of router are you using? If it's wireless, and if your cordless phone(s) are 2.4 GHz; interference could explain the problem that you're having.

I do have a wireless router, but the phone itself is wired if that makes a difference. Yes, they are 2.4G phones. Do I need to buy new phones?

Say again? The phone is cordless but wired? They are 2.4 GHz cordless phones, right? Do you also have a regular, non-cordless phone? If you do, and if the problem doesn't occur with that phone, then you've identified your problem. In any case, you need to replace those cordless phones or disable your wireless network. The interference is a recipe for trouble.

Sorry to confuse you. I have 2 regular non wired phones, and 3 cordless (2.4GHz).

OK, does the problem that you've been experiencing occur if you disconnect the cordless phones and use only the corded phones? If it doesn't, then the problem is interference between your cordless phones and the wireless network, and you'll have to change phones or disable the wireless part of the network.

I haven't tried disconnecting the cordless phones - you just helped me get the wired ones into service last week. Smile

I'll try that next and see if it makes any difference.

Interesting...I was on a long conf call last night (five hours) and had numerous incidences of dead air...I wasn't sure if it was the equipment but it looks like others have had this problem. My MOS score is consistently in the 3.3-3.6 range given that my Comcast line is 6000/384. I've thought about bumping it up a level so I can get 768 up and hopefully solve these problems.

Still, what is the issue with dead air? Is it something that we just need to put up with with Voip? With Vonage in particular?

We've never had a problem that I can remember with dead air once the we start talking, our only problem has been when someone calls to the house, we pick up and either no one can hear each other or just one end can hear. I hope it's a fixable problem or we'll have to give up Voip altogether.

Since my problem is with incoming calls, and you've said that when I have voicemail it causes the dial tone to be inconsistent.. could having voicemail make an incoming call iffy? Just a thought! I turned off the voice mail function 2 days ago. We haven't had enough incoming calls to test but so far so good.
And yesterday I bought my 5.8 cordless phones.. so hopefully that will work too.
I'll keep you posted!

I doubt it. The "inconsistent" dial tone isn't a flaw. It's called "stutter tone" and it's done deliberately to alert you that you have voicemail.

I was afraid you'd say that. Oh well.
