Unbelievable,
After explaining to the Vonage guy that I was told by the last two guys that "they'd request an update from the carrier", he has the nerve to send me another canned message almost identical to the last two. And of course no phone call like I had requested. Here's the message I recieved:

May 5th-------------------------

Dear Jesse Shearin,

Thank you for contacting customer care!

I am contacting you to inform you of your number transfer. I have
requested a status from Vonage's carrier that is handling your
request. As soon as we obtain a finalized transfer date we will
contact you immediately. Thank you for your patience in this matter.

Sincerely,

Vonage LNP
numbertransfer@vonage.com

I guess I'll have to call them directly.

I've made many postings regarding LNP and while many have succesfully ported their numbers without incident. It begs repeating ...

(1) BEFORE starting the port process, ensure that you do not have DSL on that line, that your account is current (meaning you're paying the bills on time), that you haven't reported any problems to your landline operator and your address information is 100% correct.

(2) ONCE you begin the porting process, DO NOT call your local telephone company FOR ANY REASON! If you call, it can get noted on your file that an "inquiry is open", this can stop the entire port process and result in it being rejected.

(3) Fill out the LOA and FAX Vonage a copy of the actual 1st page of your bill. No computer print-out, no flyer or advert letter you receive, your actual bill. Any substitutes MIGHT work, but it gives your current telephone company the right to reject the port.

(4) Don't try and call Vonage's origination partners. Presently this is Focal or PaeTec depending upon where you live. However, it could change to Level3 or Global Crossing at the convenience of Vonage (they have the ability to port your number for technical reasons anywhere they want). Calling Focal or PaeTec will no doubt slow the process and you are unlikely to reach the people who can actually help you.

(5) After your number is ported, it can take up to 24 hours before all phones in the world can actually call you. You may fine that wireless callers can't reach you or someone in middle of nowhere America is getting a busy or "this number disconnected" message. Don't panic -- give it the full 24 hours!

(6) Work via Vonage and their LNP department, be factual and brief and most important be specific in what you believe needs to happen and absolutely keep your opinions, nasty comments, threats out. Repeat all of your information in each email (your name, address, telephone numbers, where you can be contacted).

It's unfortunately human nature-- Long winded tirads, incomplete information, nasty folks always get the crappiest service. I've ported 2 numbers from Verizon, each took between 20-24 days to complete and went off without a hitch.

(1) No DSL and have never had DSL on the line. Address is correct. Never been late.

(2) I have only called my carrier once and that was on the recommendation by a Vonage LNP rep. The only thing the Bellsouth rep was able to tell me was that there were no orders on the line. This was after waiting 1 1/2 months already.

(3) Carefully filled out and faxed, witch my actual bill, the LOA to Vonage.

(4) I have not called Focal or any other company yet, but because of Vonage's unwillingness to really investigate any problems I feel that I may have to. All Vonage has done for me so far is send me emails saying " we'll check on it". It reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where the host could "take" the reservation but couldn't "keep" the reservation. So what is the point of even taking it. They say they will "check" on the transfer but what do they actually do? I can "check" my dashboard for an update all day long, I don't need them to tell me that they haven't recieved an update, I need them to tell me "why" they haven't recieved an update.

(5) God, I wish I could get to this step to even have this problem.

(6) I have always been professional and to the point when calling or emailing Vonage. I believe it is Vonage who is not being professional in this area. I have called the Vonage LNP Group phone number serveral times and left messages with them. I have not once recieved a response. Only on my last phone call did I show any contempt for this, and that was because the Vonage rep tried to direct me to the number once again.

"It's unfortunately human nature-- Long winded tirads, incomplete information, nasty folks always get the crappiest service. I've ported 2 numbers from Verizon, each took between 20-24 days to complete and went off without a hitch."

I have been as kind and professional as possible with the reps I have spoken with. Sometimes I don't think it matters how nice you are to them if what you need done actually takes time and effort to figure out.
I would consider yourself lucky, not accurate or nice, that your numbers ported without a hitch. Because I've done everything I know of to get my number ported smoothly, including your recommendations, since I ordered Vonage last January 31st but it seems to make no difference at all.

Jesseeu, have you asked to speak to a supervisor when on the phone with them? That MAY help.

HOLY CRAP!!!! My transfer has been approved and is set to transfer tomorrow!

I don't know if it was from posting in this forum or the last call threatening to cancel my service that did it, but thank God it's finally going to happen. I also recieved an email a few days ago saying that my issue had been escalated within the LNP group and with the carrier. Let's see.... if it transfers tomorrow that will be 79 business days. Or about 3 and a half months.
Thanks for everyone's suggestions, although I'm pretty sure I did everything I could besides threatening to cancel my account. I guess that's what it takes.

Jesse

It takes something more than that. After waiting 100 business days--nearly five months--for my number to port, and periodically calling and e-mailing to ask about the status of the transfer, I finally told Vonage I was tired of waiting and wanted to cancel my subscription. They apologized for the delay, then closed the account.

I'm still waiting for the credits (for the returned device and for the months of unusable service) that Vonage has repeatedly promised to issue to my card. I called again today, and was told they should be issued in the next three business days. We'll see.

Best of luck with your new service--you'll need it.

I started Vonage service on 1/8/2004. I got the following message on 5/13/2004

Hello,

I am contacting you in regards to your number transfer. At this time
Vonage's partner carrier, Focal, does not have an interconnection
agreement with your wireless provider. Due to this matter Focal cannot
place the transfer request. Unfortunately until this agreement in
established by US Cellular your number transfer will be stalled.

Sincerely,
Vonage LNP Department

There's no rule written that land based and wireless providers have to port each other's numbers. If you are going from one wireless provider to another, or from one land based carrier to another, they are required by law to make your number portable. It is not required that the same happens when switching from wired to wireless or vice versa.

Just to let everyone know what my outcome is, my number now rings on my Vonage line. Although I can still make calls on my Bellsouth line. Now I get to see how easy it will be to get them to credit my account all the time past the first 20 days like the Vonage tech told me they would. I'll keep updating this until I've had my Bellsouth line fully disconnected and my account fully credited as they promised.
