I received a phone call today from Vonage saying that since I'm a loyal long time customer that they were going to provide me with an additional line. It was a quick speaker that I almost couldn't understand but from what I know the only "cost" mentioned would be if I cancelled the line. So I went for it. I checked my account billing and it appears that appears that theres been credit put in to pay for the set up fee and first month. I was already worried about there being a cost I wasn't aware of but when I contacted Vonage their e-mail just mentioned the credit and no further information.

Now I received a second call about the same thing (offering an additional line) but this time the person said a month free and set up free for the additional line.. but I informed them that I already signed up.

Has anyone else been called and offered this additional line and know any further details about the offer? I've looked on the site but haven't found anything. I'd love an additional line (I live in FL but visit NY frequently and have many contacts there) but can't really afford the extra cost if its not for more than a month. Plus, I'll be upset if I'm charged to cancel it even though I was unclear of the terms, but I'm sure I can manage a way out of that if need be.

Rather than another line, you can get a "virtual number" (with a New York number, for example) for your existing line for around $5 per month. Since it's an add-on feature for your existing line I don't think there's any penalty for canceling it a couple of months down the road.

Yes, luckily I realized the possibility of the virtual number while investigating this. I guess that the "offer" I was given was just for a month free, and not continuous. Hopefully next time Vonage offers thigns on the phone, they will be more clear about the terms. And hopefully they won't charge me for termination!

there have been a LOT of scams lately with people using the "referral program", which gives the new customer a month free, to get free months themsevles. People are "selling" referrals on eBay to suckers, not to mention old and unuseable equipment but that's a different story. Wink

It could be legit, or it could be that you just got signed up for an extra line for a year and someone suckered you into giving them a free month of service.

Call Customer Service NOW and get this cleared up, while you are still in the 30-day cancelation period, just in case this is a scam. If it is a scam, you should be able to cancel the account and Vonage can take action against the scammer.

On the phone with right now with CS, and as far as he knew the BEST he could do was waive the activation fee, but he said almost all the good deals are for new customers.

As for trying to get information about upcoming features, etc, they were pretty much quiet on that. Nice guy, but could not say anything unofficial.

Well I figured what happened was that the first person who called, just wasn't very clear and informative about what was going on. It was just a free month and free activation of a second line. I cancelled it right away and luckily I was able to not be charged for termination since it was a misunderstanding.

I'm glad this happened though because I realized a virtual number would benefit me so at least I found that out Smile I guess when they called I was too excited thinking about the fact that out-of-state friends and relatives would finally be able to call me instead of just me always calling them Wink
