PostPosted: Sun Mar 26, 2006 11:53 am    Post subject: No install CD, Can not get system up and running Reply with quote Back to top

I just signed up with Vonage, I was sent the package, but no install CD was with it. I e-mailed Vonage and asked for a CD to be sent (I thought this was reasonable). I was sent an e-mail back saying I did not need a CD for it was for instructional purpose only, then proceeded to give me technical advice on how to install. I made 3 attempt this way, to no success (I cannot get a connection to the internet after hooking up hardware). I wrote forwarded there e-mail back to them, citing them chapter 5 of the linksy RT31P2 manual that states it "Recomends" to use the "Setup CD Rom" for first time install of the router. I was sent the exact same reply the 1st e-mail said.
I am not a Computer Wiz and I am at the point were I am going to send this back and go with a more expensive phone system that has someone come out and install the phone.
Soooo, my Question...Am I out of place asking that the install CD (That should have came with the product in the 1st place) be sent to me, or is the install more complicated than what was explained to me?
Any help would be appreciated,
Paul

Paul- No, you're not out of place, but no, it's shouldn't be more complicated than you were led to believe either.
Do you have an existing router attached to your modem or is this the only one?

Same issue here - I had the WRT54GP sent to me twice and never was a CD included. I usually toss those CDs out anyways but the package did claim a CD was included. Confused

I have another linksys wireless router hooked up to the modem, and hang the pc & linksys Vonage router off of it. I had to make an adjustment to open up an IP address for the new Vonage router before I set it up.( I had it locked down pretty tight). Do you know what range of IP addresses your devices are using?

I want to thank you for your help. I have been working on this now for 8 hours, this is 7 more than I wanted too. I have contacted Vonage and told them this, they I just get a reply explaining how easy the set up is, I am thinking they are standard replys. This seems like a great forum and I am sure Vonage works for you all, but I have come to the conclusion that it is not for me.
Thanks again,
Paul

There are people in this forum that can help if you ask - and can still help.

Describe your current network setup including and changes to routers and results that followed.

The instructions included in shipment and on Vonage website describe most variations but if you have an existing network it may not help. Installation CD is mostly worthless.

-You want to power down everything for one minute - (modem - routers and computers).
-power up cable/DSL modem. wait for lights to blink so it's online.
-plug in existing router and power it up.
-Access router admin page and make sure DHCP server is enabled and maximum users is set to something above 1 or 2.
-plug in and power up computer/make sure it accesses internet
-plug in Vonage RTP300 or similiar to existing network and power up-make sure cable goes to WAN port- phone light should light after a short time. Plug telephone into line1 and get dial tone.

If this does not work try eliminating existing router and use Vonage ATA only at least to see if it phone works.

If your PC is not directly connected to an output port of the RT31P2 you have to hook it up this way to set it up. Remote admin is disabled on Linksys router products like the RT31P2 out of the box. This means you have to connect your computer to one of the output ports on the RT31P2 to set it up, even if that's not how you intend to use it.

The user manual for the RT31P2 specifies the address to enter into your browser to access the configuration pages. You should be able to get to the configuration pages even if the router is not connecting to the Internet.

You generally have to power down and repower your modem and everything connected to it as part of the installation. The modem in particular won't talk to another device once it's configured itself to talk to your PC (for example) without being powered down and restarted. If you haven't done this it could be the reason you can't access the internet.

The CD is NOT required. Everything you need to do can be set from the Admin pages.
