I have Vonage and my girlfriend needs to send a 1-2 page fax every week, thats the extent of the need for a fax service, do I have to have a second line at 9.99/month just to be able to fax?

I tried to send a fax without the additional line and they would not connect.

No, you can send fax's on the regular Vonage line. I don't know why yours didn't work, but I do it all the time. Whatever problem you're having you probably would still have if you bought a dedicated fax line.

I, too, have sent faxes with the 'regular' line. I believe a Vonage FAX line is just an ordinary line without some features (like Voicemail).

You may want to search the forum for your specific FAX machine, as some need certain settings to work (relaibly) with Vonage. My HP all-in-one works fine asis.

My phone line faxes wonderfully, I put a line splitter on my phone port and share the port with my fax and phone.

Use *99 as a prefix on every fax call on a regular line.

Is there a reference you can provide to what *99 does or why it causes a fax to work?

The prefix *99 is supposed to diable any bandwidth saver setting that is on that line for only that call so a fax will go though.

Here is the info on the Vonage page:
http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=134&category=

Can I use Vonage fax service while using the bandwidth saver mode?
You can use your Vonage fax service while using the bandwidth saver mode. If you have enabled the bandwidth saver option, simply enter "*99" prior to making a fax call (enter *99 plus the 11 digit number). This will enhance the fax quality and prevent issues with your fax failing to go through.

If you have one of the following products, it will automatically detect a fax or TiVo call, so it is not necessary to dial *99:
- Linksys RTP300
- Linksys WRTP54G
- Uniden UIP1869V
- Motorola VT2442
