PostPosted: Thu Mar 23, 2006 2:58 pm    Post subject: The New Wifi phone is it available in Canada through Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

Hello everyone, does anyone know anything about the new Wifi phone which is advertised on www.vonage.com for the States. I am searching the Canada site vonage.ca but cannot find it. My friend in New Jersey has received his and he's taking it everywhere and connecting wherever there is a WIFI signal, now that phone works out a lot cheaper than my cell phone with Rogers. My calls from Palm Desert to Vancouver are 3.00 per minute plus roaming charges, now with the Vonage Wifi phone I will be able to call my family anytime. Any help and advice and information on this Vonage WIFI PHONE will be appreciated, thank you. By the way, I took my Vonage adapter plus small phone to Puerto Vallarta and pluged it into my laptop, yes, I was pluged into high speed cable from the unit and it worked great for the two months we were there. You can buy an "unlocked" phone on line and use it with a Vonage soft phone account. It'll cost some - but a lot less than roaming cellular.

Thanks Howie, Please explain, Are you saying I can get a soft phone from Vonage and tie my cell phone into it? I have an unlocked GSM Motorola cell phone already. I am looking for the WIFI PHONE FROM Vonage, we do not show it on www.vonage.ca. This phone can be used globally wherever there is a WIFI SIGNAL and the cost for account with Vonage is $14.99 per month for 500 minutes, thats in the States, will be a little higher in Canada. This phone we can use in London and Germany when we visit family to phone back to Vancouver and family. Much cheaper than my cell phone package from Rogers. New to all this so any advice re the WIFI PHONE will be very helpful.

No - this is not for a cell phone. You COULD forward your Vonage number to a cell phone with a pre-paid GSM card, which would save a lot compared to roaming - but that is a different story.

This is about the WiFi phone. In the USA - you can get the phone from Vonage as the device that you use with a new account. The WiFi phone provided by Vonage is branded Vonage (it even comes in White/Orange if you want) and it is locked to Vonage service - same as the TA. This option may not yet be available in Canada (I am not sure here - you probably know better).

Alternately, you can ADD a WiFi phone to an existing account but that would be an "unlocked" WiFi phone, not a Vonage provided or Vonage branded phone (same phone, no Vonage label, different software - like the unlocked PAP2).

To do that, you would subscribe to a soft phone account associated with your main Vonage account and you would take the configuration details that Vonage sends you (user name and 10 digit random password) and put those into the unlocked WiFi phone. You could then have you main Vonage account simultaneously ring your soft phone (WiFi account), so you would get calls to the one number.

Howie, thank you so much for response, but it is very technical for me. All I want to know, is THE WIFI PHONE ADVERTISED ON THE AMERICAN SITE AVAILABLE IN CANADA YET. I have received so many great replies since finding Vonage Forums re dccnet's bad connectings and speeds, adapters and travelling with Vonage and now the search for the WIFI PHONE, all the help and advice has been outstanding. The WiFi phone does not seem to be available directly from Vonage Canada. From other posts, it seems that it is available from Vonage UK and Vonage USA. I do not know when it will be available directly from Vonage in Canada.

The alternative that you have - is to buy the phone "retail" from someplace like: http://www.voipsupply.com/product_info.php?&products_id=802 and use it with a Vonage soft phone account that you would add to your main Vonage account. You can do this in Canada.

Howie: thanks for all the excellent information and advice. Regarding the WIFI PHONE, it's not available in Canada at the moment and when it is I can order it and it will connect directly with my normal Vonage account, don't have to have a soft phone account. P.
