PostPosted: Wed Mar 22, 2006 11:17 am    Post subject: Could Not Connect Reply with quote Back to top

Starting 3 days ago I started getting random calls, about 2 a day. The Caller ID says, "Could not connect". The phone continues to ring until it it is picked up but is dead when picked up. It appears that the caller, however is dumped into Voicemail immediately without even hearing a ring. Since it only happens once or twice a day I am having problems trying to track the problem, however I suspect one of my 4 phones is the source. I am now disconnecting one phone at a time for a day trying to troubleshoot the problem, but that goes slow.

Has anyone experienced a problem like this or have a clue?

Yes I am using the "House Wiring" The outside copper are clearly disconnected. I have been using the house phones since I ported my number over 2 months ago.

Thanks

One of your 4 phones is the source of what? What do you think it's doing?

If it is a problem with the phone, you can speed up the troubleshooting by disconnecting 2 phones at once. If the problem persists, disconnect 1 of the 2 remaining and you should have the problem isolated. If the problem goes away, disconnect both of the ones that you had originally left connected and plug in just one of the ones that you had disconnected. Again, that should isolate it.

Sounds like one of those riddles doesn't it? Sounds good in theory at least.

I'm onto 24 hours now without the problem surfacing again. I unplugged the most suspicious phone.

Hey Question?? When you are counting REN total and you have a wireless phone set of two phones, do both phones in the set get counted, or only one? Now I don't know if Vonage sees 4 phones or 5 phones total in my house??

Only the base stations (the parts which are connected to phone lines) count.

If you really start having problems, try just hooking up the cordless phone base directly to the Vonage adapter and skip the inside wiring. Household phone wiring is almost always installed as an afterthought and 90% of the time is installed wrong.

Thanks, that was what I thought. Your idea of eliminating the house wiring by disconnecting all but the cordless phone has merit and would be a shortcut to eliminating the problem but there is a problem with that. Since porting the Qwest number over SWMBO is now directly involved. She is not particularly understanding when it comes to "her" phones not working. Smile Really, there should not be anything basically wrong with the house phones or the wiring as they have been working fine for the last 11 years! I suspect that Quest is more liberal to get along with then Vonage. I remember that when I first subscribed to Vonage 14 months ago I had problems making a spare phone I had to work with Vonage but it worked fine on the copper line. I will continue to take my time troubleshooting this and if worse comes to worse investing in a 4 phone cordless set.

I do appreciate your thoughts though.

I too had problems with one phone ringing randomly after switching from the Motorola adapter to the Linksys RT31P2. It seems that the phone (Panasonic) was made to communicate internally with other extensions and the Linksys adapter was also putting out low-level signals of some type (Forgive the non-technical jargon). I put a low-pass filter that I had kicking around from DSL days on the phone line output of the Linksys and "problem solved". Here's a link if you need one of these:
