Since getting Vonage yesterday I've seen a dramatic increase in my download times. The Voip meter indicates my speed is like a 100k ISDN line when I've got a Charter High Speed 3gb line which was blazingly fast until yesterday.

Since it appears to be associated with Vonage, is there a way to correct this?
My system is like this: Cable -> Motorola Surfboard -> Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router -> Linksys Hub -> Computer/Vonage

The Vonage routers are basic devices, not meant for heavy usage... Move your computer to the hub or WRT54G's ports and leave the Vonage's ports open unless absolutely necessary....or buy a larger/additional hub/switch to handle the # of computers you have.

My Vonage Linksys PAP2 is plugged into a 4 port Netgear hub (I mistakenly said it was a Linksys hub) that is set to uplink. The Netgear hub also is hardwired to two computers.

I still have really crappy speed. Measured again, I'm at 115k IDSN vice my normal 3gb.

Thanks for the help... any further ideas?

Do you have QoS enabled on the WRT54G? If so, you might want to be sure that it is set properly ... or just disable it as a test to see if it is the culprit. If it is, then you can look to correct it.

QoS is disabled. BTW, what IS QoS? I'm looking at it but am unsure if I should mess with it or leave it disabled.

While troubleshooting I did set the Applications and Gaming port range forwarding on the WRT54G (as the T/S guide suggested). Could this cause problems?

What is QoS?: http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html

You should not have to forward any ports to the Vonage device, you should only get your QoS set up proprely in the WRT54G and then set the Vonage device to HIGHEST in QoS.

If you have a WRT54G, you should also never hook anything up to your Vonage router. The QoS on the Vonage device would then be irrelevant.

A guide (designed more with the WRT54GL or an older model WRT54G in mind) on configuring the WRT54G series to work in front of a Vonage router or device:

Have you tried removing the hub and plugging each of the computers and the PAP2 into separate ports on the wireless router?

Correct me if I'm wrong... but I don't think the PAP2 is a router. It simply connects to an ethernet port for internet access. It doesn't have any other ports for ethernet.

My Linksys WRT54G Wireless is located in my attic and not readily accessable. It's up there because it gives my system excellent connectivity regardless of where in the house I am with my laptops. I have a single ethernet line running to the Netgear hub. The hub has Vonage and 2 hard wired computers on it.

You are correct about the PAP2- it's an adapter only with no routing capability. I think it would be a good experiment to plug the PAP2 into the Linksys router rather than into the hub. It would be informative to see if you get good speeds and also good phone service in that configuration.

That's a good idea and I'll figure out how to do that (with my WRT54G in the attic it'll be a challenge).

When I first installed the PAP2 I didn't have a dial tone. After following the T/S guide I got a dial tone by setting the Port Range Forwarding as in the T/S guide. Since then I've been fooling around with the WRT54G router settings and have found the following.

The troubleshooting guide with the PAP2 includes setting up the Applications and Gaming Port Range Forwarding as following.
Phone 1 5060-5061 UDP IPADDRESS Enabled
Phone 2 53-53 UDP IPADDRESS Enabled
Phone 3 69-69 UDP IPADDRESS Enabled
Phone 4 10000-20000 UDP IPADDRESS Enabled
Playing with the enabled/disabled I found that the only one that effects my PAP2 is Phone 4 (with Phone 4 disabled I have no dial tone). My speed with Phone 4 enabled or disabled is never stable, sometimes it's ~200Kbps other times it's 1.5-3Gbps.

Additionally, I've set the QoS on the PAP2 MAC address to highest with flow control disabled on port 1 (the port that my hub and PAP2 are connected to.)
