What is QoS?: http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html

You should not have to forward any ports to the Vonage device, you should only get your QoS set up proprely in the WRT54G and then set the Vonage device to HIGHEST in QoS.

If you have a WRT54G, you should also never hook anything up to your Vonage router. The QoS on the Vonage device would then be irrelevant.

A guide (designed more with the WRT54GL or an older model WRT54G in mind) on configuring the WRT54G series to work in front of a Vonage router or device:

So your wiring is:

Cable Box -> Vonage Box -> Computer

Correct?

In that case, the Vonage box will be providing whatever QoS is available, and Vonage boxes are generally not very good at QoS. The tips I posted are for people with a Vonage device and a separate router to manage their traffic.

From what I understand here, you don't need QoS turned on.

In my case, I'm getting alot of help but I fear it's more to do with a Vonage router than a PAP2. However, since everything is plugged into a single WRT54G port... to be able to effectively use QoS I'd have to attach the PAP2 directly to another port of the WRT54G (as suggested earlier).

Frankly, I'd turn that off. Windows doesn't do anything with QoS from what I've been able to gather.

Sorry for the confusion on the router. I blame it on old age, and not being able to keep track of all the threads properly. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! What's that you say, sonny? What were we talking about? Who am I again? Wink

Anyway...

The WRT54G is a decent router, with working QoS. I assume you've gone through my previous guide and you now have your upstream bandwidth adjusted properly.

Now, the real trick is getting the WRT54G to recognize your device. If the PAP2 is connected directly to the WRT54G, or connected to a switch or hub connected to the WRT54G, then the WRT54G should be FULLY aware of the traffic from your Vonage device, and should be able to easily manage it.

Your steps for getting QoS working should literally be as easy as:

1. Configuring QoS upstream properly.
2. Finding the MAC address of the PAP2, which should be on the "Device List" in the WRT54G.
3. Carefully typing in the MAC address of the PAP2 into one of the MAC Address Priority fields and setting that MAC address to "HIGHEST".

I don't know if I've mentioned this to you yet, old age is setting in as I said earlier, but if you have a WRT54G V4 or earlier (serial number CDFA or lower, CDFB is the only "bad" one), you can really get that router pumping data by using aftermarket firmware.

Try disconnecting the PAP2 and see if it makes a difference -- it shouldn't. As others have said, the PAP2 is only an analog terminal adapter, no routing/internet functions other than the provide phone service. If you're having problems, they're most likely unrelated to the PAP2, with the only exception being if your internet provider is doing something strange b/c you're doing Voip, but this is a long-shot.

Try going to www.testmyvoip.com and post the detailed results from test call to Boston from there. If your speed has really been impacted THAT much, we should see something here.

Also, try running speed tests from this website:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/internet/default.asp

They're usually pretty reliable, 'though nothing is perfect with the way the internet works.

PostPosted: Thu Mar 23, 2006 1:36 pm    Post subject: HUB??? Reply with quote Back to top

In one of the earlier posts, the OP refered to a netgear HUB. If it is truely a HUB vs a SWITCH, would that possibly cause any problems? Switches are suppose to have much higher bandwidths than hubs.

I know its a pain in the a-- but I'd suggest crawling up into the attic and drop at least 1 more line to plug the PAP into (as picture above shows). Ideally if your going to do that, then just drop 2 or 3 new cables and for now eliminate the hub. I'd just go to Walmart and buy a few 25' patch cords.

It may not work, but at least it will remove 1 device from the possible fix list.

The difference *should* be irrelevant for the purposes of an Internet connection. A switch has dedicated bandwidth at each port, a hub has shared bandwidth between the various ports. Hubs have a higher incidence of collision in a heavily saturated network, but anything that is feeding your average under-10-mbps Internet connection should not have to worry about 100mbps-per-port (or even 10mpbs) compared to 10/100mbps shared bandwidth.

If he was running t0-Base2 (2mbps coax) Ethernet, maybe. Wink

However, "*should*" not be a problem is not the same thing as "*is*" not the problem, and I agree - a simple patch cable (or temporarily relocating the Vonage adapter for the purposes of testing) would be well worth the effort.

ok, i'll turn it off and see what happens,
personally i'm beginning to think it's a Vonage problem
not a customer config problem.
