PostPosted: Tue Mar 21, 2006 8:02 pm    Post subject: Router and Adapter Choices Reply with quote Back to top

After a few discussions** with the Vonage tech support people about my WRTP54g I was able to convince them to allow me to return it for another unit because it kept dropping all the computers on my internal network every couple of hours or so. Now my options are as follows:

Return the WRTP54g and get my money refunded (about $35). Buy a PAP2 at Best Buy and apply for the new service equipment rebate. The refund will be denied but I can call in and have been assured that a manger will approve the rebate. I'll then need to buy a new 54g router, model to be determined.

Or, I keep my WRTP54g and use it as my phone adapter and also go buy a new 54g router, again model to be determined.

Any pro/cons to which device I use as my Vonage adapter? I'm assuming that a straight adapter such as the PAP2 would work better, but I've seen a few comments that say the WRTP54g works well as only an adapter. Are there any issues with the units not lasting?

Also, any recommendations for new wireless routers that I can get at Best Buy. I don't need anything fancy or tweakable, just the standard DHCP and firewall. I need something that will support 6 wireless connection through a 3 floor house. Many of the connections will be on b not g, so the router will need to work with both at the same time nicely.

** If you care to hear about what prompted the calls to tech support keep reading.

Basically, the WRTP54g won't stay up for more than ~2 hours at a time before it drops all of the connected computers. Because we have lots of roommates, etc... this wasn't good because someone was always trying to do something and getting disconnected. So I hooked up my old D-link wireless router back up trying all of the configurations NateHoy recommended, except that I needed the g speeds from the WRTP54g for my streaming music network so I always kept it running. The only one that worked well was putting the WRTP54g in front of my D-link router. If I put it behind the D-link the download speed of my internet connections would drop from the usual 3-6 Mbps to ~400 Kbps! Upload speed would stay the same. I did all the usual tricks (turning off all features, security, etc..) but nothing helped. So I put the WRTP in front, but this caused all my internet connections to drop every 2 hours or so. The funny part is that phone service has been pretty good this whole time. The really aggravating part is that until this weekend I haven't been able to get through to tech support. I'd just get a message stating that there was a big wait and would then be disconnected. I emailed tech support, but got a bunch of replies back that appeared to be canned replies and didn't resolve any of my issues. It's been a while since I've seen such bad customer service. The worst part is that I've found several posts about people having the EXACT same problems I've had with the WRTP54g. You would think they would be proactive about finding better equipment to distribute.

I'd just get a WRT54GL (NOT WRT54G or WRT54GS) router and be done with it. All it's designed to do is route traffic and do wireless, but no phone traffic... There's 3rd party firmware available for the GL which turn it into an amazing router, very much on par with some of the business-class routers. The WRTP54G does make an excellent voice adapter, just a terrible router.

If you go this route, disable the wireless part of the WRTP54G so that your computers will use the WRT54G's wireless instead.
