run ping -t yahoo.com while you are on a call, you will see a spike or timeouts when the drop outs occur. i can almost guarantee that you will see your speed tests and your voice quality improve when you change your modem. those 3 com modems are a mess.

i don't know the best modems, but i have a surfboard (sb5100) and no issues...yet

Joe:

Do you have a number set fo Network Availability, i.e., the ISP should go down or there is a power outage, the calls are forwarded to a number you designate? Check the Features tab in your web account.

Yes, Yes, Yes!! I knew I wasn't the only one. Not only did I notice my calls going "blank" last week for about 15-30 seconds each time it happened but today I had two calls dropped. Never had that problem before. Here are my results. I get 6000/350 consistently.

What exactly is going on here? Seems to be more than a coincidence that a number of us are experiencing the exact same issue at the same time. Like I said, I never had this before.

Well,it would appear I have some good news. After working with Adelphia support, it looks like I had 2 problems. The first, was that I had too many drops coming off of my cable in. So we split the in, and ran one dedicated line to my cable modem, and the rest of the house was on the second run. The 2nd problem is that I was using my APC cable surge suppressor, and I think that was causing too much signal loss. So I replaced that with a Powermax surge suppressor, and I haven't experienced a problem in almost 2 weeks. (and I have had phone calls lasting over 4 hours).

PostPosted: Mon May 08, 2006 9:28 am    Post subject: I am also experiencing the audio blanking problem Reply with quote Back to top

I've been using Vonage for several years now and for a long time I did not experience this problem. My dad signed up last year and experienced it from the beginning. I haven't timed any calls to see if it occurs on the 15 minute intervals that I have read about in this thread, but it does appear to last between 10 and 20 seconds.

Vonage told him that it was a bandwidth problem. He ran some tests and talked to his cable modem provider who then ran some new cable to his house and increased his bandwidth significantly, however the problem remains. Also, he has a Linksys RTP300 terminal.

I contacted Vonage last year about a different issue. When they were unable to resolve the issue, which turned out to just be a limitation of their service (apparently you cannot send DTMF signals on an existing call within the Vonage network and outside the network, you can only have the terminal configured to do one or the other), they offered to exchange my older Motorola terminal with a new Linksys RTP300 terminal because it had more configurable options and may allow me to get around my issue. After installing the RTP300 we discovered that it would not resolve my DTMF problem, so I am stuck with that.

Now that I have the RTP300, however, I experience the same audio blanking that my dad experiences. It always seems to be the Vonage side that can't send data; when I talk to my dad sometimes it is my side and sometimes it is his, but it is always the other person that can't hear me when I talk to someone on a standard analog or mobile line. I have 350kbps upstream according to www.dslreports.com so I can't imagine that it is a bandwidth problem.

Neither my dad nor I have been able to get Vonage to do anything about it as they claim it is a bandwidth problem. Once they told him it was because Time Warner uses a backlevel version of DOCSIS but that was supposedly upgraded in March of this year and the problem continues. It seems obvious to me that either Vonage has a problem here or something is wrong with the Linksys terminals, but I can't figure out how to make them see that. Oh well, that is my two cents.

The RTP300 definitely has some DTMF issues which Vonage seems incapable of resolving. I STILL can't call certain IVR/voice mail systems with the RTP300. They've improved it a little bit with the firmware updates, but it still doesn't work right. I have a PAP2, which is noisier, BUT, the DTMF works properly on it.

I've got the RTP300 and I've never had a single problem with DTMF, and I'm someone who reaches a LOT of voice mail and auto attendant numbers.

Yeah, me too. Do you also access your Vonage voicemail from the phone or only from the web? My specific problem is that when I am connected to a conference call, voicemail, etc. that is not part of Vonage's system, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Strangely it seems to work less well during the midmorning EST period.

They can change a setting on my terminal that I don't have access to and make it work flawlessly, however then I can't use DTMF signals to access my Vonage voicemail from the Vonage phone. Vonage support told me that it was an either/or kind of thing, but if you know how I can reliably access Vonage and non-Vonage VRU type functions that would be great. Thanks.

The DTMF issue is a known firmware/chipset problem with the RTP300, has been since Vonage has started shipping them. I've had 2 separate ones and BOTH of them have the problem. Additionally, all of the RTP300s which Vonage's engineering department exhibit the same problem. The issue is that the adapter doesn't properly mute the DTMF from the phone when regenerating its own. Many IVR systems don't care, but the systems which are more precise sense this as 2 separate keypresses, which totally screws up trying to enter access codes, etc. Some of the cheaper IVR systems either don't care, or will get confused by the rapid succession of keypresses and totally ignore them. In prior firmware versions, I've seen the RTP300 send out 0.1sec DTMF pulses, which wasn't enough to do anyone much good. The past couple firmware updates have improved the DTMF muting, BUT, it's nowhere near perfect, and the devices with other chipsets seem to have no difficulty with this. Trust me, I've spent well over 50+ hours troubleshooting this one with some of Vonage's advanced tech reps.
