PostPosted: Tue Mar 21, 2006 3:50 pm    Post subject: Connecting RT31P2 router with PPPoA service porivder Reply with quote Back to top

I am trying to connect my Vonage Voip router to a high speed internet service using PPPoA.
My modem is DSL 208U from AZTECH .

I tried the following two scenarios:
1) Connecting my modem using RJ-45 to the router, but then I found that the router doesn't support PPPoA.
2) Connecting the modem to the PC using USB and then connecting the router to the PC using RJ-45 connected to the Network Interface Card (NIC) of my PC and then configured to share the connection using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). I am using windows ME.
In the second scenario my PC got connected to the Internet but not the router (the phone was not working). Also I noticed that when I enable ICS I can't do voice conversations using MSN!!!! but once I disable it everything works fine.

Can some one help me to know if the router can use PPPoA or how to share the internet connection, or what should i do to get the Vonage router working.

Thanks in advance.

I could be wrong, but you are not going to be able to use Vonage with this DSL Modem.

I went and looked at the specs and this is a USB Modem. There isn't an Ethernet Connection to use to connect it to either a normal router or to a Vonage adapter. I know your description talks about using an RJ-45 connection in to the router first, but they don't show this on the site.

I don't know if you have the option, but I would ask your ISP if you could get a new modem that has ethernet on it. You could even ask for a modem that has a router built in, and then just connect the Vonage device and your PC to it.

If your device does in fact have an RJ-45 connection, I still think you would need to get a separate router that supports PPPoA for this to work properly.

I am having a problem getting my Vonage phone to work due to my ISP only providing PPPoA. I have already switched my ADSL USB modem for a Westell 2200 ethernet DSL modem/router. I have successfully hooked it up to my linksys RT31P2 and am online surfing with no problem. However when I pick up my Vonage phone, I get a voice recording that says," Phone may be plugged into the wrong port..." I have tried both ports and have reset the router and everything several times. I also have never had either of the phone lights lit. Vonage tells me that the problem is the PPPoA and that I will have to install a switch between the modem and the linksys. I read on the forum that a member named Wardy was successful with getting his system up and running despite PPPoA. If you type in his name in search forums you will see the post--sorry I haven't put it here to save time. Anyhoodle, I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I don't want to have to purchase any more equipment if I don't have to. I also want to know if there is a possibility that my linksys router is just defective. Thanks.
