Maybe I should call Comcast, but it seems like it will not be very useful judging from other posts. Any ideas? Thanks again.

I called them and it's useless, I could not get an answer as to why I got the letter except that "there had to be something showing that triggered it." The tech support people weren't given any explanations, just that they might be receiving calls about the letters.

I'm really glad you didn't change anything from your original installation, I think it sort of shows that there's a good chance that the request to port your number is the cause.

What gets me is that when I went from Qwest to Comcast, it was a short process to keep our number, less than a week. Seems pretty unfair that I've paid another $85 to them so far, just for the use of my phone number that they didn't "own" in the first place.

If you visit the Comcast Forum you will see that Comcast is cracking down on these. Some comcast users have been networking several computers with just a hub (no router). Comcast's system used to just allocate seperate IPs to each of the computers but now are cracking down on the practice. You either have to pay an additonal fee ($5/mo I believe) for a seperate IP or put the ATA behind the router. Mine works fine behind the router with Comcast.

Paula's note above covers exactly how to check for possible multiple IP use if you have the ATA in front of the router. If it's behind the router and you're using multiple IPs you need to setup the router correctly. Make sure you are using NAT. If you have multiple devices assigned to the DMZ I guess some routers could let them get their own IPs from the modem, too, but that would depend on the router.

But one of the main purposes of using a router (NOT hub or switch) on a home network is to all share ONE Internet-visible IP. Make sure you're using NAT to do this.

I followed the steps that that Paula outlined, but my MTA's are showing different IP's from the two PC's (two PC's and two MTA's). Both MTA's have the latest firmware and have NAT enabled. For what its worth, the MTA's appear to have different ip addy's in the last term

I pm'd Paula and I would really be interested in what others may suggest.

Oh yeah, I have a Motorola SB5100 modem and D-Link Dl-704UP router

yikes, trying to think here..

1. Do you only have 1 cable modem?

I'm thinking yes you do, but I guess I don't understand how you have the 2nd MTA connected (and why 2? - just curious, do you have 2 lines on each?)

Would you setup be cable modem > MTA # 1 > router > PC #1 and PC # 2 and MTA #2?

I'm so new at all this so I'm probably not very helpful but I'll sure try - is it possible that the IP you see for MTA # 2 is one that's assigned by your router?

I have:

modem->router->2 PC's and 2 MTA's off the router (4 ports used).

Now, the router's DHCP configuration menu has all 4 devices with similar ip addresses, excpet for the last term. And the MTA's addy's match the ones that are on the router's DHCP configuration menu.

However, the one that appears on whatismyip.com when I use a PC is what the router is showing under the WAN status menu. There are two DNS's that are showing though...could that be the issue?

I would think that showing 2 DNS would be the issue, but I wouldn't have a clue as to how to reset that. PM one of the guys here like Moto or gary2_2k because I think they've installed behind the router.
