Hi,
Newbie to the whole Vonage thing and I've got an interesting situation.

We're buying a small in-home business and retaining the business number, however the number isn't "local". We've considered two options, either port the number to a cell phone, or keep the account open and forward the number to our house. Neither of those options are ideal.

A third option occurred to us, but we're not sure if it's feasible. Can we open an unlimited Vonage account, port the number to that new account, and then permanently set it up for call forwarding to our home? We'd never dial out on it, we'd simply be using it as a "bridge" to route business calls to our personal residence.

Any thoughts?

And to do that you would never need to actually connect a Vonage adapter anywhere. You could use either Call Forwarding or the Network Availability number facility to always forward the calls.

But, as VonageTPA suggested, you may be able to get some additional benefits by actually using more of the Vonage services that won't cost you any more.

One other thing I'll add is that Call Forwarding counts against your minutes used (because you're making an outgoing call to your forwarding number), so make sure you plan accordingly. if you'll be getting more than 500 minutes of calls per month on that number, highly consider getting one of the unlimited plans.

I've now talked with a Vonage rep and it sounds like this will work pretty slick. They're going to port the number and set it up to forward to our landline. (BTW, because of a variety of reasons, we can't switch over to Vonage full time from our land line.)

We'll still need to install the adapter to activate the service, but after that, we can run the basic service plan because incoming calls are all free. We'll never dial out, so there are no minutes to count against. The rep said that the forwarding didn't count as an outgoing call, but I want to confirm that again.

So, this looks like it'll work out great. Thanks for the help.

I agree about the misinformation. My forwarded Vonage calls count against my 500 minutes.

Thanks for that correction. It's curious that two different reps told me the same thing. At worst I I can upgrade to the unlimited plan and it'll still be cheaper than keeping the account open and forwarded since we'd incur local LD charges on all the forwarded calls, and that would add up fast. If the minutes begin to mount, they may force me into a business plan though.

I believe it depends more upon times & usage patterns rather than minutes. I put on a substantial # of minutes on my residential Vonage line, probably more than some business customers, but they haven't switched me over to a business plan. At the same time, my calls are from ~7am->1am, with no particular time being heavier, so it doesn't look like a business with standard 9-5 calls.
