Has somebody used Packet8. How is it compared to Vonage. One could save $15 with Pkt8. Any comments will be appreciated. I have Vonage. It is excellent except International calls to some countries.

Packet8 happened into the Voip service provider business after finding few takers for it's Voip MTA device.

Vonage in contrast was started as a Voip service provider and well funded by private funds and continued to receive funding from private equity firms as well.

The typical acquisition cost of a Voip subscriber is $400 -- thus to get 100,000 subscribers -- you'd better have $40m in cash in your wallet. These acquisitions include the investment in the MTA and marketing costs to acquire you the customer.

Many are anticipating the hey day of the long distance carriers, where many smaller operators 'found' nice revenues simply by offering a lower price. Customers simply 'picked' a new LD operator with no interruption of service.

As many of you have posted, porting numbers to Vonage is NOT something that takes a few hours, it's in terms of weeks. If you're carrier goes AOL or worse SOL -- it could take you weeks to re-start another Voip offering or simply days to re-start traditional service from your traditional telephone company.

Vonage, as a private company, has no obligation to post their financial condition. While I don't imagine any immediate problem -- they could go belly up with almost no warning. Simply the service stops working and they stop answering their phones.

Sorry I gave you the detailed answer when you were just looking for something simple.

The simple fact is Packet8 is almost identical to Vonage in how they run the network. Incoming numbers handled by a local CLEC (Level3 in this case) and outbound calls handled by Level3 as well.

The only thing you're dependent upon Packet8 for is their softswitch to connect the calls and the quality of the MTA they supply.

Having said that you can expect the voice quality to be equal to Vonage (meaning pretty decent). Thus you're simply dependent upon how well their softswitch works.

I have been a packet8 customer since Oct 04 and am thinking of switching do to packet8 customer support. Have been trying to port my number over for 4 months with no reason why its not done. Have gotten 1 month free, and elevated complaint 2 months ago but still no status, email or call like I asked for..

Packet-8 was the first Voip company I subscribed to. High compression codec (G.729) led to calls sounding like a cell phone. There were far more issues here on the East coast, presumably due to network issues. I found the service unusable and switched to Vonage. Confused

From what I've read on DSLReports.com, Packet-8 still has more issues than Vonage. They don't deliver on features, advertised features don't always work, people complain about voice quality and about paying for E911 that doesn't work.

Vonage still has my vote. Very Happy

This is an old thread that has sliped by..., as most members are aware, we no longer allow comparisons on this site. There are other forums better suited for that.
