Interesting thread. I'm having similar problems. In my case my packet loss and packet discards have been a little high, but there has to be more to the story, because every incoming call is clear (occassionally we drop a syllable here or there, but that's it) however, outgoing calls are pathetic. Our end seems fine, but the people on the other end say there is constant static and dropping. If they call us back immediately though, the problem goes away.
I called Vonage and they put our router in debug mode. I'm going to call tonight to see if they have reviewed the results. Hopefully I'll get a chance to talk with someone who will take the time to analyze the situation. I've tried using pingplotter and other tools to localize the source of the packet loss, but I don't know the location of the Vonage gateways so I can't run an exact test, and my Vonage device is integrated in the router, so I can't use the router logs to track it down. I suppose I could put a hub between the router and modem and then through a sniffer there as well, but I thought someone may already know the answer. |

I am certain these are QOS issues, not really affected by speed adjustments at either end. It would be interesting if some of the readers on this forum could conduct the same test I did to see if it is duplicated across the board: Make an outbound call from a Vonage phone to a cell phone or other wireline, conduct the Vonage Speed Test found at http://vonage.com/help.php?article=497&category=102&nav=102 while talking and note the quality specifically when it is uploading, and then perform an FTP upload to another server somewhere else in the US and note the quality during the same call.
All things being equal, I'm willing to bet mine is far from an isolated case. |
