PostPosted: Tue Apr 27, 2004 9:17 am    Post subject: dsl and Vonage without local POTS? Reply with quote Back to top

I have a somewhat complicated question. Rather than try to pry information from Vonage, Bellsouth, and Earthlink, I thought that I would check here and see if anyone can answer it for me.

I live in Atlanta, GA. Currently I have Bellsouth DSL (and local phone service), which is extremely fast in my neighborhood. However, it is expensive ($50/month) and I would like to switch to Earthlink, where I can get about $5 cheaper per month, along with 6 months at $30/per. I would also like to remove Bellsouth and go with Vonage for phone service. I spoke to an Earthlink rep (who seemed a bit out of his league by my questioning) and got the idea that Earthlink cannot deliver DSL to me without a local number. If I remove the local phone service my Bellsouth DSL rate jumps to $60/month. Adding Vonage to this may still be a savings, but I'm not sure if it's as worth it.

Now has anyone dealt with this, esp. in the Bellsouth region? Seems like there may be an easy solution that I'm not seeing. I have not investigated a cable modem, as I am not currently and don't plan to be a cable subscriber. Not to say that it is not a possibility, but the DSL is great and I hate to mess with a good thing. Can the Vonage account count as local phone service as far as Earthlink is concerned? Or can Bellsouth really have it so locked down that I cannot pry myself loose from their grasp? Any insights here would be greatly appreciated. And if I can manage to find anything else out, I will post it...

Ah, now I already found a lot of the answer. This post (which I didn't manage to find before I posted) answers a lot of my questions, and I will have to look into broadband cable without cable service. Still, any other relevant experiences would be appreciated.

I live north of Atlanta and have cable internet (3M/256K) I love my Vonage service. It is very reliable and works well over the cable. The only issues that I have had with the quality of the service is when I am pushing out updates to some of my remote web servers while on the phone. There's just not quite enough bandwith there. I remedied this situation by reconfiguring my router to prioritize the port that my phone adapter is on.

Thanks TechGuy. I live in intown Atlanta, near Decatur (Dekalb county). Looks like my only option for cable is Comcast. Broadband without cable runs at $58/month, but does purport to be 3M/256, which would be double my current download rate. Combined with the savings from Vonage, it could be worthwhile, but changing both services at once sounds like it may be a recipe for disaster. Looking into it further!

Good luck to you. Let me know if you need any help with your setup. I live in the Cumming, Gainesville, Dawsonville triangle and don't have access to DSL. I was using satellite internet at home, but got really tired of that. I had to pay the local cable company $400 to build a line to my home for internet only (i live 1/4 mile from the street) but was it worth it! I am now completely off the POTS grid and love it. As soon as Bell disconnected my service, I went outside to my interface box, disconnected their copper, then went in and plugged my phone adapter up to my inside wiring. Now, all the phone jacks in my home will work with Vonage...all I do is plug up a phone!

Techguy, what kind of router do you have?

It's an old Cisco MC3810 that I'm just playing around with. I used to have it configured for Voice Over Frame at work, but I dumped this one for a newer model. Works great though and is a real workhorse.

It's nice to have, but configuring packet shaping and prioritization on this Cisco is a real booger. It took me about 2 days after I brought this thing home to get everything configured to just hit the internet. Over many hours of trial and testing, I finally have a setup that works to my satisfaction, but I don't think I'll keep it long. I'll probably end up retiring this old Cisco relic and go with a much newer make and model. I have a D-Link DI-604 that I really like, but the management tools are not very robust. I am thinking about a high-end NetGear VPN router, but we'll have to see.
