I just received my RT31P2 adaptor today (and after reading this forum, may not have been the best choice). Anyhow, I already use a Belkin Pre-N wireless router which I need to keep. I do not need to use any of the ethernet ports on the RT31P2. How do I use this with my wireless Belkin router? Should I have selected another device?

Thanks,
Jamie

I've got the RT31P2 and have had no problems with it.

Connect the ethernet cable out from the cable modem to the 'Internet' port on the RT31P2.

Then go out from Ethernet port 1 on the RT31P2 to the WAN port (or Internet or whatever it's labeled on your wireless router).

You might have to clone a mac address if your ISP requires it to access the internet but that is not a difficult thing to do.

Then plug your phone into Phone 1 on the RT31P2.

My wireless router is also linksys so maybe thet play nice together... I don't know. At any rate it took all of three minutes to get up and running and making phone calls on Vonage.

I see.
Right now I have 3 computers, 1 printer and the Belkin router assigned 192.168.2.1 through 192.168.2.5. Will the RT31P2 be automatically assigned 192.168.2.6? I know I can just plug it in and see Smile but the network is being used for work right now... any other connection tips?

Anxiously waiting for employee's to leave Smile!!

Alternatively, you can leave your setup the way it is and plug the WAN port on the RT31P2 into a LAN port on your existing router, and set QoS on the router to favor the RT31P2 for quality phone calls. I recommend it if the Belkin is a good one and you have enough LAN ports on it.

Your choice of the RT31P2 is fine.

PostPosted: Sat Mar 18, 2006 6:50 pm    Post subject: No Dial Tone! I just received my RT31P2 Reply with quote Back to top

I was so excited about receiving my router - I haven't had a phone for a week! Today since receiving my RT31P2 7 hours ago I've been troubleshooting to make it work. I followed the direcitons got everything correctly hooked up but I can't get a dial tone. I did the trouble shooting suggetions from the site over and over. Finally, about an hour ago I drove up the road to call Vonage customer service. I was on hold with customer service for 15 minutes. A hindu or pakistani gentleman finally answered and wanted my router model number and phone number. Of course I left the house not knowing I needed either. So he couldn't help me.

Why can't tech support be web based? I don't have another phone line and driivng to a neighbors house to wait on hold for 15 minutes is not fun.

Now after the fact I've gone to product reviews and it's not looking so good. I really need for this phone to work as I have stuck it on all of the resumes that I sent out last week. Maybe that wasn't smart but it just never crossed my mind that the service would not work.

I have Comcast high speed internet.
I connected the ethernet card from my cable modem to the appropriate ethernet places on the router box. I plugged my one phone line in one of the 2 phone line places on the router (of course it's plugged in the phone)
Everything is powered on. The internet connection works but not the phone. NO DIAL TONE! Please help. Thanks

It would be a good idea to post this in a new thread. Many people are likely to miss it sitting down at the bottom of another discussion.

Please post all the technical details listed in the sticky post at the top of the forum.

Let's be clear about your setup. You've run an ethernet cable from your modem to the WAN port on the RT31P2, right? And your computer is plugged into one of the LAN ports on the RT31P2? You're getting internet service but no dial tone. Is the phone light on for the phone port that you're plugged into? Try re-booting everything. Power down and wait 5 minutes. Then power up the modem, wait 1 minute, then power up the RT31P2, followed by the computer.

Steve, must you tell me how to post? Maybe I didn't want to copy and paste all of the info. Gimmeneez!

Ya' know I'm an old 40 something chick that doesn't know a lot about networking and routers but I can tell when someone is talking to me in a condescending manor. I worked at Eartlhlink for a while and I'm familiar with techie attitudes when they're aware that someone is not a technical expert. I have to admit I didn't communicate in concise specific detail using technical language because I don't know the language very well. I can read... Everything is in it's appropriate port.

I should be able to have satisfactory customer support regardless of my level of technical knowledge. The Vonage commercials give no impression what so ever that one has to have some level of expertise in order to use their service.

I'm shipping the router back Monday. If I have the kinds of problems that I've been reading about I will contact the FTC.

No problems at all! Plugged in power, plugged RT31P2 to an available LAN port on my existing Belkin Pre-N router, plugged in a phone, made a few calls! I was surprised to hear how clear it was. I may have to do a little tinkering (that's just what I do) but it works extremly well out of the box.
I called myself on one of our BellSouth lines and noticed a extremly slight delay (nothing that would have been noticed if I didn't call myself).
Thanks,
Jamie
P.S. For travel purposes, is there a smaller phone adaptor available, perhaps something that isn't also a router?

Jamepc,
Can you share how you got yours to work. I have the same kind of router but no phone service. Care to share?
