Signed up Apr 7th, received Moto Apr 15th. I followed the installation instructions, cablemodem->moto->linksys. After 5 minutes, had dialtone. Inbound/Outbound worked. Verified moto had latest software. Worked out of the box.
I let that go for a few days, even though I noticed my download speed dropped in half with the moto box in the picture. I removed the moto, and download speed resumed (doubled). Reading in this forum, I decided to try a few other configurations. First, I put the moto behind the router, and as expected download speed was high, but now QOS was not operational, and I could force outgoing voice to drop by uploading a large file at the same time.
Reading in this forum that moto's NAT was probably to blame for the drop in download speed, I added another linksys and disabled moto's NAT. Since the moto's NAT isn't very optimal, I'll disable it and use the linksys NAT. The configuration is now cablemodem->linksys1->moto->linksys2->PCs. Download speed was high. Doesn't appear that QOS is enabled, because uploading a large file causes the outbound voice to drop out. Does disabling NAT also disable QOS?
I know that someone is working on the motorola firmware. I was an early linksys router adopter, and went through many months of pain - resetting the router many times a day, etc. I'm sure Vonage is aware of how important it is to get this Moto box right.
I cannot sacrifice half of my download speed all of the time to obtain QOS functionality. |

I use the Linksys wrt53g flashed with the firmware from the following:
www.sveasoft.com
and use the band management functions that are included in the firmware and so far everything looks good.
cable modem > linksys > Motorola ATA |

I wonder if there might be something in your MTA's firmware that is causing the slowdown. My setup is RCA Cable Modem -> MTA (VT1005) -> Linksys Router (BEFSR41) -> PC and I have not noticed any slowdown at all. Hmmm, I have not tested my speed while I am on the phone though. Anyways, the firmware that my MTA is running is: VT20_1.1.16e , Config File Version: 8887825 You may need to talk to Vonage Tech Support if you need to update your firmware or config file. I hope that helps. |
