PostPosted: Fri Mar 17, 2006 2:18 pm    Post subject: Outgoing Caller ID & activating credit card Reply with quote Back to top

I did a search on this, but couldn't find anything about this...plus there were 44 pages of results and I got tired of looking.

I got a new credit card a few months ago, and when I tried to activate the card the automated system kept telling me the card couldn't be activated because I wasn't calling from my home. I tried calling a second time and got the same thing. So then I thought that maybe I had put my cell phone number on the application, but that didn't work either when I tried calling from my cell phone. I tried a 4th time from my Vonage line and it still didn't work. So then I called the customer service number on the back of the card rather than the number for activations. The activation number was totally automated and had no way to get to a live person. When I called the customer service number and told them what was happening, the guy said "I'll be happy to activate your card for you. I can see you're calling from your home number." He activates the card, and I use it no problems.

A month or two later I get a postcard in the mail reminding me that I need to activate my card. I tried to do it again with this automated system (even though it had been manually activated), and I get the same thing. It still says that the card can't be activated because I'm not calling from my home. I've never had this problem before with activating a credit card. Any idea what could be causing it, and why the automated system can't see my number but regular customer service can?

It's a Circuit City card, which is issued by Chase bank. It's the only Circuit City/Chase credit card I have. No problems like this with activating any other store or bank card.

This is probably happening because the automated system is reading the ANI info that Vonage is sending and it does not match your home number.

Here is an article that describes what ANI is and how it relates to (and does not match) your Caller ID phone number.

http://www.docdroppers.org/wiki/index.php?title=Understanding_ANI_%26_CPN_with_VoIP

When you called customer service they probably saw the CID info and that was did match your home number so they activated the card for you.

Hmm...that's very odd. I have a Chase card (straight Chase, no other company attached to it) and have activated the past 2 cards at places other than my home # and never had a problem with it. Come to think of it, one of the activations was off my cell phone (different area code than home #) and Vonage line (different area code than what they have on file as my "home" address).

Just curious, are the last 4 digits of the customer service 800# on your card 800-xxx-2000 ? I'm wondering if there are different Chase systems for different cards.

mharvey: I checked out that link and called the phone numbers it listed (866-MY-ANI-IS & 800-444-4444). I called both of them twice, once with caller ID blocked and once with caller ID unblocked. Both of them read off my correct phone number, even when I had caller ID blocked. The ANI info that Vonage is sending is apparently my correct phone number.

VonageTPA: The customer service number on the back of my card is 800-xxx-8997. Don't know what the number for the automated activation system is...I threw away the card that had the number on it. I'm sure I'll get another one...they've sent me 2 so far. I'd kinda like to activate it through the automated system so they'll stop sending those postcards reminding me to activate it.
