PostPosted: Thu Mar 16, 2006 11:02 pm    Post subject: Help with Motorola ATA behind Router. Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,
I have a friend who is not highly computer literate, and she is on an extended business trip. She has brought her Vonage Voip box (Motorola) with her and she is going to try to connect it behind the router of an internet cafe. She wants to be able to make and receive calls using her home number this way.

I have been reading old posts in the Vonage forum to try to see what types of issues she may run into so that I might be able to help her.

It seems like some folks connect behind the router without having to enable pppoe and make no other changes with simple success.

Other folks seem to have to enable "Port Forwarding" on the Vonage box.

Is there a post anywhere on the Vonage forum or any other help website that gives specific instructions how to enable and configure port forwarding in case she needs to do this.

Any help is very much appreciated.

It's a crap shoot as to if this will work or not... I've not seen too many internet cafes where you have open access to LAN connections, but if you manage to do so, it probably will be plug & play... As far as port forwarding goes, this is done on the router, not Vonage adapter...so if it doesn't work on the first try, she might be able to beg/persuade the internet cafe employees to open the ports for her, but I wouldn't count on it. She'll also need to bring a smallish line-powered telephone (or "borrow" the phone from the hotel) to use Vonage with.

Broadband RJ-45 in a cafe?...wow... Doubt it. But possible.
I can't think of anything she would have to change, as long as she's just using it for the phone. Port Forwarding would be for their router settings which she won't have access to. If the calls don't work, and the cafe is willing to open the ports on their router then http://www.vonage.com/help.php?article=89&category=39&nav=5 these are the port to open. Otherwise, PnP baby Dancing and maybe it will work. By the way, don't expect 911 to work there; Dial it and EMS will show up at the address it's registered to.

She is not having any luck. Here is what she said, "No luck connecting directly to computer. Keeps getting stuck at 4 blinks which means it is trying to connect to Vonage. It has already acquired its network address and downloaded its configuration profile from vonage..."

I am going to try to get her to join the forum and post her experience directly. Maybe someone can help by asking her the right questions.

Well, I would suggest trying again the same setup.
There has been a few problems with the service over the w/e in the MidWest.
EDIT: Three Blinks = Downloading its configuration profile from your Voip provider.
Since she did get to 3 Blinks that probably means the moto can get thru.
PS to the EDIT: As I was typing the first edit my moto box went to 3 Blinks, but did reconnect.

As VonageaPTA said above, it's pretty much a crap shoot. There is also not enough info for us to really troubleshoot the issue. For example, if she plugs a computer into the router, can she surf the web? If not, the cafe may require a login, and the router can't log itself in. Or it could be a port forwarding issue, or a a number of other things.

Does anyone know if the company specifically blocks connections from any particular country or countries (blocks a range of ip addresses)?

I dont believe so; While other countries are not supported It would not really be in their best interest to block. BUT the other countries may very well be, especially if the country sponsors there own Voip.

She was wondering if it was because of some type of country blocking. I doubted it, but I thought I should ask anyway.

I sent her the link about port forwarding, which is probably the problem, and I sent her links to this forum and thread.

From what she's telling me, they let her connect to the ethernet line coming out of their router (RJ-45). So I suspect that whatever software and/or hardware firewall they're using is keeping one or more of the required i/o ports blocked off.

There is a language barrier between her and the cafe owner, so she has to find someone to translate for each of them.

This is going to take a while I fear.

Thanks again for the ongoing help. It is appreciated.
