I'm a Vonage newbie (equipment is being shipped to me) and want to know how to activate all the phone jacks in my house to use Vonage. I know this information is proably already posted on this board, but I haven't been able to find it.
As I understand it from Vonage, all my phones that I want to use need to be connected to the adapter or I can plug the adapter "directly into the existing telephone wiring in their homes." Could someone please explain what this means? Do I plug it in where the line enters my house, or can I simply plug it into any jack to make all the jacks Vonage-friendly? And, if I do this, what happens to my exising land-line phone number?
I appreciate any help you can lend to help shed some light for me. |

Here ya go:
Step 1: Read this: http://michigantelephone.mi.org/distribute.html
Step 2: Disconnect any physical connection (wires) coming into your house from the outside phone service per the instructions you just read.
Step 3: Instead of plugging a phone into the adpater, just plug the same port from the ATA into any wall jack.

When I open the box on the side of my single family house, I find the 3 wires (yellow, green, red) connected under 3 different screws and an actual phone jack looking connector (like in the picture on the home wiring link http://michigantelephone.mi.org/distribute.html ). Can I just simply unplug this plug from the phone jack in this box? This is all I have under the cover when I open the box (3 wires and the plugable thing)! Looks too easy and simple...There is a message on the box that reads, "disconnect plug before installation, wiring or for testing". I'm assuming that since I've turned off my regular phone company service and unplugged this plug in the box, that I am now completely disconnected from the telephone company's wires. My Vonage works with all the phone jacks around my house and even in the phone 200 feet from the house in my garage. Am I safe? Thanks! (I apologize to you forum pros, that I didn't make a new "thread" I'm just trying to get some answers. [B] |

Usually unplugging that plug is all you have to do. If you still have your old service connected, just unplug it for a few minutes and verify that dial tone goes away for phones plugged into your house jacks.
Once it's unplugged, just plug your Vonage adapter into any jack in the house. If things are wired in the normal way you should then have Vonage service at all the other jacks. |
