PostPosted: Wed Mar 15, 2006 6:01 pm    Post subject: troubles with bandwith Reply with quote Back to top

Hi, i have problems with my Vonage devices:
My internet is 96Kbps up/down
I have my lines configured to 30Kbps in bandwith saver

I have 2 devices

1.- PAP2 with 2 lines enabled.
The problem here is that when use both lines at the same time the fisrt line that gets connected does it at 30Kbps aprox but the second connects at 80Kbps aprox. ( this is from measurements made by my ISP)
The problem is that when i make a call, i hear the ringing even after the other side has answered.

2.- RTP300 with 2 lines enabled
the problem here is similiar. Both lineas are configured to work with 30Kbps but the ISP tells me that they connect to 80Kbps each.
The problem here is worse, the line blacks out, voice drop, etc.

I have to differents ISP for each adaptor by the way.
In both cases only the Voip adaptors are connected, there are no computers working with these connections (only when i have to make tests i connect them)

I hope you can be of help

Thank you very much in advance

The PAP2 only has enough processing power to do one line @ 30kbps, the other will run at 90kbps when operated simultaneously. If you're only using one line at a time, I believe they will operate properly at 30kbps. This is a known fact about these (not sure if Vonage knows about it, but the VoIP/Asterisk community is well aware of it.) The ringing already after the party has answered is a known issue as well, and is due to the way Voip works. The PAP2 generates a ringing sound to let you know it's accepted the dialed number as valid and is trying to push the call through. When the call goes through, it then passes the call audio, but sometimes the tone generator circuit is still finishing up the current ring, waiting for the next command. The person you are calling doesn't hear it, just you. Mildly annoying, but it doesn't really bother me.

The RTP300 is a different story, and I'm not sure what the proper answer is, only have 1 Vonage line configured with it. It might have the same limitations as the PAP2, or it might not since it's based on a totally different chipset.

I'd highly suggest getting more bandwidth from your ISP. Even running 30kbps on a 96kbps connection isn't going to leave much room for anything if you have a computer connected to that same connection.

I'm just curious, why 4 lines and 2 ISP's? Is faster broadband available to you in your area?

I agree with VonageTPA, I don't think you are going to be able to do anything with the devices, except maybe put another non-vonage router in front and start running some QoS to keep the bandwidth down...but even then it can't differentiate between lines.

I would look into increasing bandwidth.

The 4 lines are for my office.
I have 1 ISP for my office and 1 for my home (my office is in my home but i have my Internet connection separated).
Because my 4 lines didn't work correctly with my office connection (96kbps) y put 2 lines on my home connection (300kbps).

My answer now is:

Can Vonage configure my PAP2 to use G723 codec in one port and G726 codec in the other so i can have one line connected at 30kbps and the other at 50kbps (instead of 90kbps) that way i wont have more troubles (my ISP is going to give me 128kbps at the same price of 96kbs by the way)

Thanks for all your answers

I'm not sure if they can separate lines by codec, as I think it's a device wide setting.

Can you get anything higher than 128? I know it should work, but that is borderline, especially if someone is on the internet and using the phone...

The dashboard lets you alter the bandwidth by phone #, so that may work for you.

If you provide your location and your internet connection type we can assist you further.

Also, run a Boston test at www.testyourvoip.com and post the results.

I know the PAP2 allows configuring bandwidth per port, BUT, you're still going to run into the same issues...when running compression on simultaneous active lines, the PAP2 only has enough processing power to handle one phone line compressed, while the other one will remain at G711.
