This is a first, someone cut an SBC fiber optic cable in town today and my whole city was without phone service all afternoon. My phone worked perfectly though. Thanks Vonage! |

I'm pretty sure that everyone who owns a cell phone had phone service. |

Maybe not.....every cell tower has to connect to the "wired side" at some point. |

Sweet! Nice to hear positive comments.
JoeO since you cancelled your Vonage before even receiving it is your primary objective for sticking around here to make sure nothing positive is said about Vonage? |

That's great.
Of course, that would be logical for outbound calls, since you're going out over the Internet then the actual phone switch you use depends on where you are calling.
So it's not necessarily true that a Cell phone, which may use the local telco circuits, would work. On the other hand, some cell phones can relay signal from tower to tower and bypass the local grid if it is down - that depends on your local cell infrastructure.
Could you receive calls during that period, or did you get any? Inbound calls would be handled, most likely, by a local POTS switch. |

We had a similar failure here a couple of years ago.
All landlines went down.
All cell phones on the landline provider's cellular network went down (service showed as being present but calls could not be made or received).
Cell phones from at least one alternative provider worked fine as long as you were calling outside the local calling area. Since I didn't have any other phones handy, I couldn't see if I could receive a call.
So... the answer is maybe. Probably most mobile providers' phones worked, but some networks didn't.
In all fairness, VoIP can go down too. (If you'd have been on DSL, when your phone service went down would your Internet have gone down too?) But the idea of having a landline and a cablemodem-based VoIP phone is an interesting way to achieve backup phone service. |

Hookbill,
I am trying to find a reason why you continue to harass me for every post I make.
You like vonage, great. I'm here to share my opinion and experience just like you are...so give me a break pal.
Stop trying to start an argument with me.

I wouldn't have a problem with you doing that IF you had some experience to share. But since you have never had Vonage, and don't intend to get it I just don't understand what your purpose is here. You've never said anything but negative things about Vonage since you first walked in here.
Hey, I call them like I see them. And in your case "troll" comes to mind. |

Wow now you are going to attack me with name calling??
My experience is that when you order vonage over the phone..they can't tell if there are local numbers in your area, and even if you ask them to verify...they can't tell you.
The other experience is that customer service can't help much AFTER the purchase and neither can tech support. I see people posting messages that they sped HOURS on the phone trying to get help with refunds...and at that point...I can share my experience.
I hope a moderator sees these personal attacks by you. This is ridiculous.
You've been a vonage subscriber for what? 3 months? And you think you are a VOIP genius...I don't know...seems like you just don't like anyone to disagree with you.
I will say a prayer for you tonight. |
