PostPosted: Tue Mar 14, 2006 9:46 am    Post subject: Question about this setup (Dlink and RTP Linksys and QOS) Reply with quote Back to top

Hey guys, after a lot of reading and setting up the Vonage adapter...I'm starting to think those of you who are using the bridge concept are probably getting the best quality out of your Vonage .

Right now I have the RTP as first point of entry into the network...acting as a dchp server, which plugs into the lan port of a demoted router (now a switch) and now that DLINK is just handling WAP...nothing else.

So i have the RTP doing dhcp, port forwarding, remote desktop forwarding and control, and also using Vonage. I set QOS on the Vonage to enable and also made the VOICE take priority.

But after seeing these pictures...

This one here :

I'm wondering if this would work for me. Even though NO ROUTING would be going through the RTP, my dlink wireless router does not have QOS. So i'm wondering if it will give me better or worse quality since the DLINK will just think its an ordinary packet transfer from the switch or any other IP device.

Maybe this setup will work if the primary router has QOS....but maybe some of you have some insite on this.

If the only traffic going through the RTP is voice, will it still go through the DLINK without a problem? or will a primary router with QOS be the only solution to this setup.

My experience with the QoS on the RTP300 (or, more to the point, it's wireless-enabled cousin the WRTP54G) is that it is spotty, at best.

Your best bet is to try it. I suspect the RTP300's QoS really isn't doing you a lot of good, so you may be better off putting the routing/DHCP load on your Dlink and letting the RTP300 focus on Voice only. If it doesn't work out, setting things back the way they already are is only a recabling job away, right?

If you need working QoS, you will need a new router.

I guess the biggest question is - are you having a problem? If your current rig is working, and you don't get reports of choppy audio on the other side, then either the RTP300's QoS is working or you don't need it. I'd only buy a new router if you actually start experiencing problems, though you can certainly swap your routers around and play with different configurations for free. Wink

Totally agree with you there....

I am not experiencing problems, but I also just got the Vonage router yesterday...and havent been able to do the usual downloading of newsgroups.

I'm probably downloading 5 gig a day, 4 days week, which is 20 gig a week, 80 gig a month.

I will have to do extensive testing when my pipe is maxed out, and also going to test my upload while doing those large downloads, and also test upload while talking on phone.

I have cablevision, so im at 10/1 Mb down/up.

I enabled QOS and set it to 2mb, and so far when I'm on the phone...i still have 500KB (kiloBYTES) available for regular upload.

once i start the heavy downloads, i'll place a 20 minute call to my cell and listen to the radio through it Smile Smile

Understand that QoS will not help you on download (voice quality you hear), only upload (voice quality the other side hears):

yes, i know that...

the object of the test I mentioned is to see how well I can hear the cell phone which will be playing the music.

The upload is fine since i'm only downloading at 2. MB/s.

I'm just worried that I wont be able to hear anyone when I'm maxing my pipe.

thats why I want to put a cell phone to the stereo, and listen via my Vonage phone.
