Question to All

As the year progresses, you will see more Voip service providers entering the market. One of the targets -- primary line residential service.

Many of us have had our home telephone numbers for years and changing that number represents an obstacle that may well prevent our moving to these services. Thus, I assume we'd all want to 'port' our number.

If you're porting a landline to Vonage via cable service, this is no big deal. However, if you're porting your primary line and have DSL service this could represent a problem. Why? DSL is often (but not always) brought in on the same pair of wires. If that's the case, I've stated that porting that number AWAY requires that FIRST the DSL line be brought in on a separate pair of my wires. My opinion was 'good luck' getting your current telco to do that without complaint and without charging you new installation fees.

If you have first hand experience on porting your number that has DSL service we''d all appreciate your experiences

I recently moved from an apartment where I had DSL to a house with a cable modem. I initialy wanted to keep my phone number, but in the end decided it was not worth it. I am a former Verizon On-Line employee so I discussed this with some friends who work over there stil and this is what we came up with:

Step 1. Call DSL Provider and tell them you want a second phone line with a new number. Have DSL service moved to this number.

Step 2. Once the new line is up and running, ask Vonage to port the original number, they will work with your local telco and will cancel the original line once the port is complete.

Your local DSL provider will undoubtedly charge you soemthing, but the charges may be minimized r reduced because they think you are ordering more services from them.

In the end, I decided it was much simpler to just get a new number, not to metion much cheaper since you ahve to keep paying for al the POTS lines untill the port is complete whihc can take some time as we ahve all seen.

One note of hope, cell phone companies are all over number portability and within a few months I am confident they will ahve worked most of the kinks out of the system and number portability will become much more smooth. Once this happens, porting numbers to Vonage should also get much easier.

This was a bit of a sly posting on my behalf (I believed I knew the answer).

The answer is with the sole current exception of Qwest, you cannot have DSL service without having a telephone number attached to it.

Thus it's virtually impossible to have your primary telephone line Voip AND utilize DSL service.

Qwest is offering something now termed "naked DSL" (meaning DSL but no underlying phone service) in response to competitive losses.

It remains to be seen whether other traditional telco service providers will follow suit, but for the moment, if you have DSL you only bet with Vonage (or others) is for 2nd line service.

To get Vonage without paying my local Telco for basic service, I decided to check out broadband cable. Over 4 years ago, DSL was offered in my area, but broadband cable was not. I got DSL from earthlink, and bellsouth is my telco providing the line. Bellsouth CAN technically provide DSL without phone service, but they don't want to. Of my $49.99 earthlink charge, about $32 goes to bellsouth.

I found that by switching from DSL to Cable, I would not only save $10 per month, but double my download speed. I went from 1.5MB DSL to 3MB Cable. Upload for both is 256k. My cable company (charter communications) offers broadband cable with or without television cable service. I use DirecTV.

Moral of the story...If you have DSL, check your cable provider. Fine by me if bellsouth would rather have $0 than $32.
