I've been reading through various xbLive and Halo threads on here, but it seems that my problem is a little different (maybe? maybe not?).

I too have trouble losing connections to games when playing Halo 2 (nothing else, only H2). Granted I don't play any other big multiplayer games.

But here is what I found out for me. When I get dropped, my whole network goes down and I need to cycle the modem and router before anything comes back. So, for me its more than just my xbox loses xbLive.

Here's my standard connection stuff:

Comcast (8MB down / 768 up) -> Moto SB4200 -> USR 8054 -> xbox/360/ Vonage RTP300 / computers

Now with all of that said, I can play 2v2 and 4v4 and 8's free for all games all nite long on Halo 2. I don't get dropped til I play either 6v6 or BTB (8v8). AND it only happens when I'm host because my friends tell me that when I drop, they get the blue screen (meaning I was host).

Now as far as troubleshooting network connex on my end. I have tried this on my xbox and on my xbox360 ... same results. I have tried the RTP300 first then the USR 2nd with the xbox in the RTP300 and in the USR router and all various combinations of such. I have tried completely unplugging the RTP300 from the USR. I have even tried unplugging all of my routers before going on XBLive and plugging my xbox directly into the cable modem and I still get dropped in the big game scenarios where I am host.

The only thing I haven't tried is upgrading my cable modem. So, does anyone know is there a problem inherent with my older cable modem? inherent with Comcast's internet?

The thing I can't understand is this ... when I completely unplug Vonage, I still lose my internet connection while playing Halo2. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I never had this problem til getting Vonage.

I suspect that this problem and your adding Vonage are purely coincidental. Especially since removing Vonage from the picture doesn't clear it up.

Unless you want to buy into the worst case of the "Comcast V. Vonage" conspiracy theories and the mere presence of Vonage on your network caused Comcast to de-optimize your entire internet connection in spite. I doubt that, though.

Not sure what to tell you, though. You may want to try asking the question on a more gaming-related forum, but it certainly sounds like a cable modem or cable service related issue. I'd get on the horn to Comcast and ask them to check your connection.

well guys, I think I have found the solution to my issue. I borrowed a friend's cable modem for a week, and had zero internet drops while playing lots of large games (12-16 players) with Vonage attached.

My old modem : Motorola SB4200
new modem: Motorola SB5100

The main difference that I can tell between the modems if the 4200 uses the old DOCSYS 1.1 protocol, while the 5100 use 2.0

My guess at a symptom is that adding Vonage to my current XboxLive use caused too many concurrent connections hitting the modem and the older 1.1 protocol didn't handle that well, thus the dropped connection. That's my guess. The only other time when my connection dropped was when using bittorrent ... which again causes lots of adding/dropping of simultaneous connections

That could be. Of course, my even older Linksys (DOCSIS 1.0) modem supports both Vonage AND BitTorrent at the same time, but that could just be a really, really good (even if very old) modem. Wink

In any case, if the equipment swap fixes the problem, it fixes the problem. 'nuff said, and enjoy your new stability. Wink
