I am sure that this has been addressed before but I cannot find a direct answer so I am sorry for asking it again if it has been answered.
I want to get back all the speed I am paying my ISP for and get away from the short comings of the Linksys RTP 300 supplied by Vonage.
If I reinstall my original Linksys Router in front of the RTP 300 and take my computer connection from the first router and just use the 300 as a phone adapter will Vonage still be able to see it and update the firmware as needed? Is there anything else that I am missing or problems that I can cause?
Thanks |

it can still update. as for the other question that gets asked and explained an average of more than once per day, ask it again if you actually have problems. |

Chick, you can do that with your setup, as you explained it. The only issue is to make sure whatever router you put in front has some QOS on it, and turnoff everything (DHCP/QOS/etc) in the RTp, so it doesn't have to think more than it needs to. See my signature, I'm doing what you want to do. |

New day - New Questions
I made the switch and so far everything seems to be working fine.
The only question is the router I put up front is an old Lynksys BEFSR41. I have no need for wirerless at this time as the whole house is wired for cat5. This ancient Lynksis does not appear to have any QOS on it and that seemed to be a major concern to Nate. Second the address of the RTP 300 is no longer valid when I try to access it.
If QOS is really needed on the up front router does anyone have suggestions on what I should by and how do I get to the RTP 300?
Thanks Again |

QoS is only necessary if you have a problem without it. If you start doing large uploads or something and the other end starts griping about choppy or poor audio, then you'll need a router that has QoS. Don't waste the money if you don't need it.
As to accessing the RTP300, you can do it one of two ways:
1. If and when you ever need to log into it, which probably won't be often, just plug a computer into it and log in.
2. Set the RTP300 up for remote access (plug a computer into it, log into it, and under "Administration", turn on the "Remote Router Access". Then you can plug your computer back into the regular router and when you want to access the RTP300 type http://vonageip:8080 into a web browser, where vonageip is the ip address that the main router assigns to your RTP300.
With the number of times you'll likely have to actually log into your RTP300, I'd just go with option #1. I have mine set up for remote access on my LAN, but only because I'm constantly logging into it to check what something is labeled to help out here, and whatnot. For the most part, once you get the RTP300 up as a Vonage adapter only, you won't need to do anything with it any more. |

Thanks Nate,
If you are anywhere near Peabody Pond (Sabago) I'll but you a drink this sumer.
Looks like I cheated NavyDavy and otheres out of some of the credit. Sorry, but I guess you expected that from an Old Coasty, back when they were still guarding our coast and working for the treasury Dept! |
