I have a WRV54G and a WRTP54G. The WRV54G is connected to the modem, with the WRTP54G behind it. Everything appears to work fine now as long as I keep the wireless on the WRTP54G turned off.
I will soon have to replace the WRV54G (I borrowed from work), since it has no QOS support anyhow. It would appear that if I try and use the WRTP54G as the "one" device, I have pretty poor performance.
I was thinking of ordering the WRT54GL. Any comments on that model? Otherwise, I may just use an old junker with two NICs and BrazilFW (Coyote Linux). |

I use the WRT54G V4 which is hardware-identical to the WRT54GL. Once you get it configured properly, it's a great little router.

I also have a WRTP54G, and it was a poor router for my purposes (no QoS support, which I NEED since I only have a ~200k measured upstream connection, and poor support for P2P and other heavy load applications). I went out and bought the WRT54G V4 and put aftermarket firmware on it, and my problems vanished very quickly once I got the wireless on the WRTP54G turned off and relegated it to a Vonage device only. It's a GREAT Vonage device.
PS: The "old junker with 2 NIC" is still an option, and should give you working QoS, but you are still looking at doing a lot of routing through the WRTP54G, and you'll need its wireless capabilities. |
