PostPosted: Sun Mar 12, 2006 1:59 pm    Post subject: Can I have biz and residential on same cable modem line? Reply with quote Back to top

I have comcast cable modem with Vonage RT31P2 router with business Vonage service, using both lines for the business. I'd like to sign up for Vonage for my home phone as well. Can I get another Vonage router for the home lines and connect it to an ethernet jack on the original router? Will this work? If so, will it effect the QOS on the router that is 2nd in line?

Thanks

Chuck

I guess it may help to clarify my setup...

Cable modem -> RT31P2 -> Linksys WRT54G -> computers

So would the new netowrk setup be this:

Cable modem -> WRT54G -> RT31P2 & New Vonage Router -> computers

OR:

Cable modem -> RT31P2 -> WRT54G & New Vonage Router -> computers

(assuming this is possible)

You can certainly have both on the same cable modem. Of course, you need to have adequate upstream bandwidth to handle the three lines.

I would think you would use the WRT54G as your primary router (connected to the cable modem) and then connect the computers and Vonage adapters to it. If you run out of ports on the WRT54G then I would suggest you pick up a switch (which is pretty cheap) to get more posts. I would not connect anything to the Vonage adapter's ethernet ports...just use them as phone adapters.

Thanks David, that's exactly what I needed to know.

I have 3 computers, 2 of shich are wireless and 1 wired, so the 4 ports on the WRT54G should be plenty to serve that 1 computer and the 2 Vonage routers.

Only question is, do I need to setup any special settings on the WRT54G to get max QOS on the 2 routers, or do any port forwarding? Or will the Vonage service find those adapters throuygh the 54G without any setup from me?

Thanks again

My test speeds are 4.12 download and 340 upload.

I have two adapters behing a router (not a WRT54G) and did not need to do any port forwarding.

You may want to setup QoS on the WRT54G to ensure that the Voip traffic to the adapters gets priority. Since I don't have one of those, I can't tell you how, but I am sure someone else can chime in. (And I think if you do a search, there are some threads that even have screen shots of how to do that.)

Note that if you are using the normal settings, if you were using all three Vonage lines at once, that would be an estimated 270 KB out of your 340 ... so it is tight and you would want to be sure that QoS would give your voice traffic priority.

340k upstream will probably work as long as you don't do a lot of uploading/downloading on your computer(s). If you do push quite a bit of data, then consider upping your internet plan to something with a higher upstream rate.
