Can anyone tell me why the QoS tab is soooooooooooo limited on the WRTP54G and much better on the RT31P2, its predecessor? One would think that a newer model would at least have the same features or better than that of an older one.
My QoS tab is useless, and folks can't hear me when I do heavy file UPLOADS!!!! |

out of curiosity, how did you have the rt31p2 set up that you can't set up with the wrtp? and what firmware does it have? |

Both routers have a pretty good QoS as long as the routers are not made for Vonage. I was told by LinkSys that the folks over at Vonage have exclusive rights, own, and write their own firmware for any LinkSys router that is to be used on their service. LinkSys is left totaly out of the loop. So in the case of the WRTP54G, Vonage took a feature rich router and turned it into a crappy one and often a useless one while both on the phone and doing file tranfers. But as long as I do EITHER one or the other then everything is just fine. I guess Vonage doesn't want to allow people to tweak the routers that are to be used on their service. On the older RT31P2 one can without going into great details manage their upload bandwidth on the QoS Tab enough so that the problem that I am having would be solved. However the QoS tab on the WRTP54G is a joke and totaly useless. When one download the user manuals to both routers all the nice features are listed but they don't exsist on the actual routers themselves. This is because the manuals are written by LinkSys before the rocket scientists over at Vonage get their hands on it. I see this problem getting worse in time when junior is online gamming and mom and dad are trying to make phone calls. Anyway at this point I can only wait till Vonage realizes and acknowledges this problem before it gets out of hand and comes out with new firmware to bring back the features that LinkSys put in. |

without taking the time to actually look for myself since I'm lazy, and since you're too lazy to state the specifics, then...ok, I guess you just want to to vent about it. but as I think about it, I think someone was mentioning the qos on the rtp300, and wrtp by association, basically doesn't work at all anyway (it doesn't throttle whatsoever). I've always had a wrt54g in front so I use it, but like you're mentioning, the point of Vonage offering routers is so people don't need to go get their own...even though that has solved a lot of problems on this forum. |

I've seen the source code to the original RTP300 firmware, and I can assure you, the QoS wasn't any better in it. Bascially, the router portion of the RTP300 isn't ready for prime time. It wasn't when it was first released, isn't now either. If you want QoS, buy a WRT54GL router, which can handle just about anything that your cable modem can handle. |
