Post subject: 4 feet from any other device?
please forgive me if this is an ignorant question, but i've had some minor issues with echo and call quality, and have been reading these forums and the vonage knowledge base, and they state the Vonage Device should be at least 4 feet from any other device. i'm guessing this means having it right on top of my computer tower is a bad idea? what other devices should i keep it away from? TV, stereo, lamps??
also, what exactly is moving the device away from other devices going to solve? less interference?
sorry, it's late, i'm usually smarter with this stuff, but it's been a long week
thanks in advance...

Hi, I have had my vonage adapter for a year next to my wap 11 access point without a problem. However, keeping the adapter at least 4 feet from phones especially 2.4 gig and 5.8 gig seem to help stabalize connections. If the phone are closer, they interfear and cause echos or calls to be dropped

I have my modems, router, switches, and Vonage adapters mounted on a board on a closet wall with no problems. But I have no wireless gear in that mix. My access points are in different locations.
You didn't say whether your Vonage adapter had wireless or not. That might be the key to whether you need to be concerned about its location.

As you can see by my avatar picture, my RT31P2 is stacked with my cable modem and WRT54G wireless router. In fact, the Vonage adapter is the middle of the 3, sandwiched between the cable modem and the WRT54G. About 3 inches to the right of that stack sits my Uniden 5.8 GHz phone base, and its all on a shelf about 3 inches above my 19 inch monitor. Everything works perfectly. The "4 feet away from all other devices" is laughable! Oh, and the other poster's comments about echo or interference from 5.8 or 2.4 GHz phones could only be true with a wireless Vonage router, and even then is doubtful, as seen by my 3" proximity between the 5.8 GHz phone and my wireless router.

2.4 GHz phones have the potential of causing interference with a Vonage wireless router, 5.8 GHz phones do not.

FWIW my Vonage adapter is right behind my monitor, about3 ft from my printer, in between 2 speakers and the computer is just below it. I have no problems.

There actually is sound scientific theory behind keeping some distance between the devices, 'though 4 ft is a bit much. Cable modems are tiny radio receivers/transmitters. Because of this, it is a good idea to keep other RF-emitting devices, such as wireless routers, cordless phones, and other electronics away from them, as they all do emit RF interference. Most of these devices have shielding inside them to protect the critical parts from this interference, but sometimes this is one of the areas they cut costs on, and the consumer suffers. DSL modems are also susceptible to this type of interference as well, but not quite as much.
