I apologize in advance if this topic has been discussed...couldn't find any specific references when searching the forums and/or reviewing recent postings...
I recently bought a PAP2 retail adapter with the intent of signing up for Vonage. The setup instructions say an account must first be established at vonage.com prior to activation.
Here's the problem...when I go through the online setup process, it requires that I purchase new Vonage hardware (there's no option to use retail hardware). Even if I get the hardware purchase price back via a rebate, I still have to pay for shipping. Consequently, I'd rather not buy more equipment if I don't have to.
So... 1. Does anyone know how I can sign-up without buying more hardware? 2. Would I still get the "one month free" deal via an alternative sign-up mechanism? 3. Upon reading the forums, most people seem to recommend using Vonage hardware rather than retail. Is this purely to receive the hardware replacement from Vonage, or is the RT31P2 a better choice than the PAP2? I intend to use the hardware as an adapter only and not as a router. (note: the RTP300 isn't listed as a choice)
Thanks in advance for any insight. |

1. Go here to sign-up and activate your store-bought hardware: http://vonage.com/retail_subscribe/
2. Yes you still get one month free
3. I bought my PAP2 from Sam's Club and have not had an ounce of problems. Others probably feel it's better to get it through Vonage in the event it needs repair, but not sure how you/they will handle a warranty replacement - meaning if you send it in to them, how fast do you get a replacement? I you bought it at a store, you can get your replacement same day by buying another. I believe they come with a 1yr warranty anyway.
Hope this helps |

The RT31P2 and PAP2 are identical when it comes to the phone portion of the device. The RT31P2 does have some known issues with overheating (if it gets too warm, it acts strangely and locks up) and they occasionally die for no reason, but there are thousands of them in service running without a problem. I have a non-Vonage PAP2 and it's not bad. The sound quality's not quite up to the level of the RTP300, but it's on par with my Sprint land lines. As a plus, it's a smidge larger than the size of a deck of cards and doesn't seem to have the overheating issues, at least I've not encountered them yet if it does. |
