PostPosted: Sat Mar 11, 2006 10:55 am    Post subject: WRT54GS with PAP2 and MAC filtering Reply with quote Back to top

Sorry for these stupid questions, but I couldn't find the answers by searching. I have just purchased and activated a PAP2 phone adaptor, but have not yet set it up. I have Adelphia Power Link and a relatively new Linksys WRT54GS router. I am unsure of the version at the moment, but I will assume it is the newest one. I currently have it setup using DHCP with WPA and I filter by MAC address for my laptop. I think I want to connect my devices thusly:

cable modem ->WRT54GS ->PAP2

I think that is the best thing to do, so my questions are:

-Do I need to add the MAC address of the PAP to my router, or since it will be connected wired, is that unnecessary?

-Do I need to give the PAP2 a static IP? Can I do this and still use DHCP for my other devices/computers? Can anybody point me to where I can learn how to do this?

-Do I need to do anything with port forwarding or the QoS in the router? We will be using the phone very little, usually only at times when the internet will not be used. Should I give preference then to the internet? Any other things I need to be aware of?

Sorry for so many questions, especially if the answers are easy ones. I just could not find this info. Maybe there is a step by step guide out there that someone could direct me to. Thanks much for reading.

I am also using the PAP2 connected to a WRT54GS router. Mine is a Version 4 router.

The MAC filter on the WRT54GS is only applied to the wireless interface. That means that the PAP2 does not have to be added to the MAC filter.

I did not do anything to configure my router for the PAP2 (static IP, port forward, etc). I just plugged it in and it worked.

I also have not done anything qith the QoS settings. I have a relativly high upstream bandwidth and I have not had any problems with voice quality even when I am uploadign with bittorrent. At some point I may look into that but right now it is not a priority.

Thanks for the responses. This morning, and after a very frustrating evening, I got everything to work. Ultimately, I believe my system did not work because my account was not fully activated. No matter what I tried I could not light up the phone led on the PAP2 adaptor. After a quick call to Vonage customer service asking about my account, taking my router out of the line, and once again resetting everything, I was good to go.

After I verified the phone was working, I put the router back in front of the phone adaptor hoping it would work. It did not at first, but did after a reset of the modem, router, and adaptor. The only difference now is that DHCP is enabled on the phone adaptor. When I disable it, it does not work. Any reason why this would be the case? Since the adaptor is after my WRT54GS is there any reason why I would need to set the DHCP one way or the other? Will performance be affected either way?

Thanks again.

heh, it has to get an ip somehow. dhcp is the easiest way. or you can set a static ip. not sure why you're messing with it to begin with though.
