Recently purchased the router myself; but I haven't had any issues as of yet. Will do some further testing though.

Are you using it as a wireless router ? Seems like a dumb question; but I'm not using it as a wireless router at the moment, so i ask. And of course the Hawking HBB1is not a wireless device.

Hi,
Yes I use the wireless radio, set to 'G' only with the MIMO ('Turbo G' off) as well as the wired. As far as Vonage is concerned it is a wired only solution - cable modem -> router-> PAP2 (connected to port1). I would love to hear from any owners of this router with Vonage. If you can, leave yourself a long voicemail - I'll call my work VM and just read from the paper until it times out in 3 minutes. Under every configuration the Trendnet has choppy voice about twice a minute. No probs at all replicating same test with WRT54G.

Will perform your test and see how it goes. Have you tried perhaps turning off the SPI firewall on the router? Any messages in the log about it blocking stuff going to your router? (save the log to you hard drive and search for the IP address of the Vonage box.

it's ON here at my end. But it's possible it's dropping packets on your end for some reason.

Don't know if this would make any difference; but did you give the router a static IP?

On Traffic Shaping make sure Connection Type : is set to Cable. Just a long shot; but it might be selecting it wrong on auto-detect

Hi,
Tried turning off the SPI and setting the traffic shaping to cable, from auto, same results.

But thanks for the suggestions, and please let me know if you find anything with your router that may help.

OK..tried out your test; but I did not have any problems. I did find a problem I was unaware of though.

My phone's voice mail indicator did not blink (and I didn't get the quick tones when I picked up the phone) even though I did have voice mail. Went into router log and found out that router was blocking a packet from Vonage server to my router. Turned off the " SIP" ALG in the Special Applications menu and voice mail works just fine now.

Even though this ALG has to do with Voip and help file does mention it might cause some issues with some Voip devices. Even though in my case I was not getting any issue with actually making and receiving calls; it did effect voice mail.

Thanks for trying this out and reporting back here - I really appreciate you trying to help.

Yes, I actually read the manual as well, and have turned off SIP ALG, in addition to SPI etc. Turning off the SIP ALG did fix the weird audible ringing I was experiencing, and I thought I had found the problem, but it still has choppy/broken outgoing voice.

What adapter are you using? I'm pretty certain that the problem is either some incompatibility between the Trendnet and my Linksys PAP2, or just a defective router. I'm leaning towards incompatibility because the router seems to work fine otherwise - but it is unusable with Vonage.

I'm using the Linksys RTP300 phone adaptor. Thing is that I believe that ALG SIP deal with ports 5061. The Vonage info on forwarding ports says this

SIP: Port 5061 UDP is used for older Vonage devices (devices provisioned before 2005) Also, BSP Proxy Groups 1-8, and a.voncp.com communicate on port 5061.

So perhaps turning off ALG SIP might not be a good idea. (how old is that PAP2?)

I suggest you turn SPI back on open up the ports that Vonage needs and then see what happens. Add a rule in the gaming section.

BTW..were you able to test it out with the wireless off? Also (might as well ask..even tough it;'s grasping at straws) did you follow those crazy instructions when upgrading the router. (disconnecting everything..etc..etc)?

I don't know how long the PAP2 has been out, but mine was provisioned in Nov 2005 and in experimenting with 5060 &5061 ports forwarded (using WRT54 setup), I don't seem to need them, which would be consistent with the requirement for "devices provisioned before 2005".

I have turned SPI back on, because I won't run a router without it, but did turn it off to test, and as noted earlier, it didn't make a difference.

I have my ports forwarded to a reserved IP address of the PAP2, and have from the beginning, so it's not that.

I haven't tried with wireless off, since I won't use the router without it,
but I will give that a test since it is easy to do, (the router has a hard-switch on the back to disable).

I followed their firmware upgrade procedure to the letter. I had downloaded the firmware before switching routers, and it was the very first thing I did.

Also, do you know what the two un-labeled LEDs are for? Do yours ever light up?

Thanks again,
Chris

So in my continuing battle to make the TEW-611 play nice with Voip I just

-re-flashed the current firmware (which I had done first thing before setting the router up)

-Disabled UPnP

-Disabled the Windows Messenger ALG (which says it is dependent on the SIP ALG which I previously turned off)

Made two 3 minute test calls - both were perfect. None of the dropouts that I was getting.

TestyourVoIP scores of between 4.2 and 4.4 for the outgoing call to Boston on 5 tests.

So having done several things all together, I don't know which was the secret sauce - but for I'm happy for now. I might experiment with turning back on the ALGs and UPnP to see what happens.

EDIT:
I went back and re-enabled UPnP and all the breaking-up was back. Disabled UPnP and it is perfect. I wonder why that would cause a problem?

If I re-enable the SIP ALG, I get the weird audible ringing/double ringing. I haven't tested it, but I bet it also interferes with voicemail indicator as Uroboros noted above.

Uroboros,
Thank you again for helping debug this. It was your comment about the UPnP messages in the log I sent you that prompted me to turn it off. I would love to know if you have similar Voip quality issues if you turn UPnP on. Would be a good thing to give as feedback to Trendnet for a firmware fix.

Thanks again,
Chris

turning on UPNP would allow something to external (like software on your PC) to control your router. Some file sharing programs can do that now. Opening ports as needed. So it could be that some software..maybe even Windows Messenger was constantly changing stuff in there.

So keep UPnP turned off. If any ports need opening..you can do that yourself. You don't need some external source controlling the router.
As for the Windows Messenger ALG..turn that off too. Along with the Messenger service in WinXP. (which I believe is the Messenger they're talking about.).
