What a dissapointment to receive this inferior device from vonage in the mail today. It will not work with my existing wireless router. I told the agent when I signed up for vonage that I had to use a wireless router so why did they send me this piece of junk? In order to get this router to work with my wireless router I will have to set up port forwarding and possibly static IP addresses on all my computers. The vonage customer service agent said I should call my router's maker about that. How about I return your useless router instead and cancel service? |

how the hell do i get on the phone with an actual manager rather than someone in India who wants me to reboot my router? I've tried 30 different permutations of the phone help. |

Many people use RT31P2s in conjunction with wireless routers, so it's not clear what your issue is. Try posting the technical details listed in the sticky post at the top of the forum, and we'll see if we can help.
In the typical situation, where everything is using DHCP, the RT31P2 can be put behind the wireless router and used just as an adapter for phone service. Often no more is required than plugging the WAN port on the RT31P2 into a free LAN port on the wireless router. |

try this ... this is my setup
modem ---> wan port rt31p2 dhcp on address is 192.168.15.1 (available address range 192.168.15.50 - .100 (QoS on for voice)
lan port #1 rt31p2 ----> lan port #1 wireless router dhcp off address 192.168.15.2
this setup works for me i can access either router and can see all the pc's hooked up to both routers and even get to my modems setup page at 192.168.1.100 |

I'm glad that works for you but I have no idea what the hell it means. I was under the impression that you did not have to be tech savvy to use vonage. Clearly I was wrong. |

Do this:
Turn off the RT31P2. Find a little button on the back of the thing, and push it in for 30 seconds.
After that, turn off your wireless router and your cable modem, and connect like this:
Wall-----> Modem
Modem---->Wireless router
Wireless Router--->RT31P2
Try that, and tell us what happens. You want help, fine, we can help. You think your not savvy enough? So what? You came here for help, we'll get you thru it, just ask questions if you don't understand. Remember, we all WANT to use this, it saves us a buttload of money. We'll make it work, or find out that Vonage needs to help you. |

I'm not telephony savvy but I'm not a moron either. I've tried the reset option. Actually I spent 1.5 frustrating hours on the phone to India to get the useful bit of advice. No, the problem is pretty simple I think. My wireless router is blocking the vonage device. It could probably be solved by portforwarding or whatever the hell DHCP is. There are two issues here:
1. poor customer service. When I signed up for vonage I specifically expressed concern about vonage working with my existing wireless setup. Why then did vonage send me the rt31p2? In fact, vonage actually missed a chance to sell me an upgrade--a wireless router with phone jacks. The phone help system is an absolute mess. The customer service agents provide no help at all and are incapable of transferring me to someone who can talk about exchanging the rt31p2 for something else. I am quite happy to through money at the problem.
2. I have neither the time nor inclination to delve into the esoterics of router firmware blah blah blah. I suppose I could learn it all and become as tech savvy as some of you, but that's why natural light hurts your eyes and not mine. |

Ya know what? There are plenty of people here that will sit with you and walk through it, but I don't think you want that help. I think you just want to b****. I'm done wasting my time on this thread. |

I agree with the above posts. I too have an RT31P2 that Vonage sent me working perfectly with my wireless router. Simple setup, no port forwarding.. nothing tough at all.
Modem > (WAN PORT) RT31P2 (PORT 3) > WAN PORT in Wireless Router. No settings changed.
Couldn't be any simpler.
I've had this setup for over a year with absolutely no trouble. I did recently have to do a bridge-router set up for a friend, and the folks here walked me through it step by step. All the posts above mine are exactly that - people taking THEIR TIME to help you. No one here is getting paid a cent to help you or anybody else. We're just lovers of technology and fellow Vonage-ites.
Unfortunately, Vonage isn't for everyone. If you are under the impression that things are too tough, send the equipment back. VOIP just isn't for you... Some people want nothing more than to pop a phone plug in the wall and get a dial tone... If this is you, send the box back.
If you want our help, try the several suggestions above and post your results. |
